white, female, wanting to go into aerospace engineering
private school : ranked 1st in class
93% average... dunno what that is GPA wise
my school only offers one AP : AP Biology, am also taking AP Computer Science correspondence.
Math Honours grade 9-11, Science honours grade 10, French honours grades 9-10
ACT: 34... but scored crap on the writing portion (how closely do they look at that?)
SAT IIs : taking them in physics and math IIC.... haven't gotten scores yet... practice scores were 800 physics, 750 math
.... also took SAT I , but I had the flu and forgot my calculator so my scores were terrible.... does anyone know if that's gonna affect me?

ECs:
Student COuncil President, Astronomy Club president/founder, co-editor for school newspaper, Mission Team (travel to 3rd world countries to build houses), Band (clarinet - 4 yrs)- have ranked superior/gold in nearly every festival, Ballet (15yrs), tutor 4 students in math, physics, and chemistry. Also did cheerleading and swimming grades 8-10.

have been working 20 hrs/week since grade 10, volunteer as a reader at my church, research assistant at a bog over the summer.

school awards: AP Biology, Chemistry, Math Honours, French, Science 10 Honours
other awards: Distinction on nearly every ballet exam up to Advanced 1 RAD level, scored within top 25% on a bunch of national math contests, rookie of the year award for cheerleading...also a published poet.

please and thankyous =) I'm also considering Stanford.

Canada is very tough, only 10 people got in from Canada last year. I'm actually Canadian as well (Indian male), and applying to MIT too. However, the female in engineering thing won't help, since you don't apply to a specific school at MIT, only to the school itself. I'd say it's a fair reach, but it's possible. As for Stanford, it seems more likely (another place I'm applying to as well)

Really really good shot, probably better for MIT than Stanford bc. MIT actually cares if you're a girl. Student Council + 34 Act + Val... I'd say 50-50

I do not think it is 50-50 at all, or anywhere near that high in fact.

You forget how bloody difficult it is for internationals to be accepted into top US colleges like MIT and Stanford. They'll look at your ACT more than your SAT I since that's what you're submitting, but they will still see your SAT I score since it goes with the SAT II score reports.

You're clearly talented and well-rounded, but you don't show significant passion or proficiency in the math/sciences. You have that top 25% in Canada, but top 25% does not make you stand out at all. Have you ever taken the AMC? Qualifying for the AIME already puts you in the top 5%, which is far more impressive than top 25%.

Anyways, good luck. I'd say you are a match for MIT if you were a domestic student, but international admissions to MIT are bitterly tough.

It looks very hard for international students including canadian to get into.
As Hoonose told us, 10 students from Canada and 4 out of them was from Toronto.
3 of them were the international olympiad winner.
one guy is 2 times of gold medalist of IPHO, The other is also gold medalist of ICHO and also won silver medal for International Bee contest and got 2400 SAT. and the last guy was also silver medalist of ICHO and won bronze of IMO this year. The other student has USA citizenship with probably not bad awards. Those 3 students are from my son's school. So for international student, if they don't have big awards like international award,
it looks very very hard.

yeah... I figured my chances are pretty slim.

I'm into robotics if that helps at all..... its just a hobby though, but I've built a robotic arm to organize my closet... I'm gonna write about that for one of the optional essays.

mmm... nope haven't taken the AMC... didn't even know what it was until I looked it up just now =S
