lilahozi - is MMSS admission really basedly primarily on SAT and AP math scores? and how does MMSS admission differ, as you say, from WCAS admission? don’t MMSS applicants automatically apply to Weinberg?

@cloudwatch. freshman admission seems to be.

WCAS admission gets you into Northwestern. WCAS admission considers your transcript, SAT scores, essays, ECs, the whole 9 yards. MMSS is after you’ve already been accepted into Weinberg.

i see. well hopefully i can get into MMSS!

oh, and one more thing, is it be bad if i don’t have a math teacher recommendation as an mmss applicant? i don’t have a problem with my math teacher or anything; it’s just that the other teachers know me better as a person.

and sorry OP for never posting my thoughts about your prospects so here it goes:

Like what other people have said, I think you have a great chance at getting into this program. I don’t think the AP scores will hinder you THAT much as other people are telling you it will be, since the only 3 you got was on an English test. Plus, if you can even get to the AIME level, I think that says something about your mathematical intelligence: some people do not even have a high enough score to qualify for AIME in the first place. So I think that should you get into Weinberg, I think you have a good shot at getting into MMSS. I think we just have to write a kick ass short response in the online webpage. Well, I hope that helps. Best of luck! Let’s hope we both hear good news around late March next year.

Thank you very much cloudwatch! Good luck to both of us =)

And for that question of yours, I highly recommend you to send a PM to lilahozi as she’s a current student in the MMSS program and is very knowledgeable in terms of MMSS admissions.

it seems to me that no one up to now has even mentioned the essays required for MMSS program. Are they that trivial?

mathematicism: no problem and thanks for the info!

sharonlqc123: i don’t think they are “trivial” at all. but i guess, due to the brevity in the length of the responses, we have to be very concisce with our words.

cloudwatch:what do you think would happen if I write basically similer things in my supplement to NU and MMSS essays? Since I wrote what NU attracted me was its MMSS program

sharonlqc123: I am not completey sure b/c I basically did what you did too - wrote about my attraction to MMSS as being a major unique factor in applying to NU. But what I did was write generally about the program in the NU supplement, and write more specifics in the MMSS application (such as in the question that asks us why we are interested in MMSS) Good luck!

This is what my S did last year, except that he was applying to the Integrated Science Program (ISP) where he is now matriculating.

Just to update… I got waitlisted.
