Yes, well looking at the details of admission to CMU CS it looks like a real long shot anyway.

@fallenchemist and what about LAS and ENG CS? like do they have diff job prospects or do they carry the same weight

@IDontKnow4 - That I am not sure about. But the people at UIUC should be able to tell you. They keep track of job results for their graduates, by major. Also you might want to pose that exact question on the UIUC forum. They are pretty active it seems, so you might get some good input there.

I would think that given the job market for CS people, whether out of engineering departments or not, if you graduate with a good track record you should be fine either way. But it is worth asking over there and see who knows what.

@fallenchemist very true… thx for the input. 1 more question tho… with my stats, do you think NYU Stern Business School is possible?

Stern is tough, of course. You are at the 25th percentile for your CR and W scores, and probably around the 65th percentile on math. That’s for the overall school. Stern is probably tougher. But then you have that 4.0 and a fairly rigorous course selection. So your chances seem good, not great. My own guess would be 50-50.

@fallenchemist yea that’s what I was thinking but a Finance or Accounting degree doesn’t seem as prestigious as an Engineering right? (kinda confused between which major to pick)

@IDontKnow4 - Oh, I don’t know (ooops, no pun intended) about that. I guess prestige is in the eye of the other parties. I know a lot of people think of accounting as boring, but that is not always the case at all, and as I understand it the job market for accountants looks very good for the foreseeable future. Especially if you specialize in international accounting like with China or Brazil. And of course finance can be extremely lucrative. I think some jobs and their prestige also varies within cultures.

Not to be too cliche, but don’t worry about prestige. Focus on what you think you would enjoy the most, especially since any of those 3 areas appear to be strong in jobs. Prestige seems great when you are daydreaming. When you are getting up to go to work 7 years into your career, it is nothing if you don’t like what you are doing.

@fallenchemist very good insight! and if I apply do UIUC into the ENG CS program and don’t get accepted… do they offer alternate options? or is it “rejected means rejected” ? For example, I can choose finance or CS in LAS if theres that kind of option after I don’t get into ENG CS.

bump

I would say:
Univ Maryland College Park: match
Univ Illinois Urbana Champaign: match
NYU: low reach
Rutgers Univ: low match or possibly safety
Carnegie Mellon: mid reach
Georgia Tech: high match to low reach

Good luck!

@IDontKnow4 - Not sure. That would be another question to ask on the UIUC forum.

@fallenchemist ok thanks for the input
