What are my chances for each of these schools?

Your GPA is on the lower side for Chapel Hill and definitely Northwestern, but in the range for George Washington. Your SAT is low for all three, but if you bought it up just a little George Washington would be a good match. Great EC’s! :)

@pepper1594 but overall according to cappex my chances aren’t really on the low side. They say that they are medium and stuff. I am applying early decision to NW and I think I would have a moderate chance? What do you think?

Early decision would be a great idea as long as it’s definitely your first choice school and you are certain about finances. It definitely ups your chance of admission. Have you visited?

I don’t think your GPA is that low. Many universities will take the grades you got regardless and recaculate a new GPA taking into account AP /Honors and other factors. What’s your class rank?

SAT is low for Northwestern. Unless you can raise it, with a fairly average/low GPA Northwestern is out-of-reach unless you can convince them otherwise.

@pepper1594 I have not visited but it is my first choice. @Ctesiphon my class rank is in the top 10% I believe. I am applying ED to northwestern but I do believe my essays are different from the rest…

Also my senior schedule is:
ap lit
Ap gov
Ap macro
Ap human geo
Advanced topics in math
Journalism 4 honors
Critical thinking and study skills.

I have taken ap world, ap psych (passed with a 5), and ap language (passed with a 3) everything else has been honors.

Broadcast journalism, I live in Florida, I don’t care about what type as long as it is the college experience but preferable similar to the schools listed above. @ahsmuoh

Yes I have I am applying there, but I would like something with a little more prestige. How much do you think I would have to raise my October sat scores to have decent chances at the schools listed above? @ahsmuoh @Ctesiphon @pepper1594

at LEAST into the school’s 25% percentile range. However with a less-than-average GPA for students going to Northwestern, you will want an above-average test score to make up for it.

@ctesiphon this makes me want to cry… Lol. I’m applying ED bc it’s my only hope but what other schools can give me similar prestige but better chances of getting in?

My daughter got rejected from UNC with higher GPA (4.0 Uw and 4.7 weighted). and a 2200 sat and 34 act. And equal or better EC’s. You can want more “prestige” but if your stats don’t get you in it doesn’t matter. South Carolina does have the #1 ranked honors college in the country amongst public universities. You may or may not get into honors there - you would be on the brink.

A very large part of prestige is simply a low acceptance rate, among other factors. If you don’t have the stats, you have a low chance of admission.

Prestige also depends on your field, in the job market. Certain schools are more known for business, others for engineering, others for the sciences, etc. What’s your intended major?

Well, that certainly is a field NW is known for! I understand you wanting to go to that school.

My state flagship, Mizzou, has very respected journalism programs. I am not 100% sure on broadcast journalism in particular, but it would be an easy acceptance for you. However you would not get much $$$ from them if you’re OOS. Do you have any financial need?

I think BU is known for journalism too. That may be more in match range for you as well.
