Chance me for Northwestern, Vanderbilt, UMichigan, Carnegie Mellon, Tulane.

Hi I’m a Korean/Ukranian/American Male applying Civil Engineering to the above schools. I was already deferred from Tulane and Michigan when I applied EA. Sent Michigan a LOCI the day after I received my decision.

Accepted to Purdue and University of Iowa both for civil engineering.
Rejected from Harvey Mudd EDII (Not Suprised though).

Applying from Chicago, Illinois.

Any insight is greatly appreciated

STATS:
GPA: 3.70 UW, 4.95 W (inished 7th semester with 1 B. Was an 89 too, but It shows up as a letter grade tho :frowning: )
SAT: (670 R, 790 M) 1460 (Super scored)
Class Rank: School doesn’t rank. I’d estimate top 10%, Top 20% for sure.

AP’s:
AP Calc AB (4), *AP Lang (3) APUSH (3), *AP Euro (2).

*I never actually took these classes marked with an asterisk, but our school required us to take these exams anyways. The only the AP Classes I took were APUSh and AB. The rest of my classes were IB Diploma Program Classes.

Senior Course Load: (All weighted as college-level courses)
IB HL English Lit II
IB SL Physics II (school didn’t offer HL)
IB SL Math/Calculus
IB HL Biology II
IB Theory of Knowledge II
IB SL French II
IB HL History II

-Varsity Golf Team (3 years) Captain Senior Year
-Piano for 12 years (I’m such a stereotypical Asian whoops)
-FUSE/MAPS Biomolecular engineering club - Shadowed at the MSOE center of Biomolecular Engineering. [Our school only had one Engineering club]
-Camp Horizon - Sleepaway camp for adults with disabilities. I served as a volunteer attendant
-Built a computer and a bike from scratch
-Other minor clubs.
-200 Hours of community service
-Wrote my IB Extended Essay, a 4000-word independent research paper in Math, using calculus, polar equations, and trigonometry to examine the maximizing properties of the Fibonacci sequence in plant phyllotaxis. I plant to send them the abstract through their “additional information” addition on their portal this weekend.
-Worked at my mom’s restaurant over the summer. Part-time, 3 days a week.

No major awards, just stuff like Ap scholar, Illinois State Scholar, Advanced to Illinois State History Fair Expo freshman year.

Rec Letters: Wasn’t able to read any of them
Physics Teacher for 2 years: Knew me very well. Was the top student in his class senior year.
French Teacher for 2 years: We grew very close as well. Imagine it was very personal.
Counselor Rec: She liked me as well. Or at least I didn’t do anything to annoy her (last minute requests, being rude, etc.) I imagine it was a solid letter but nothing too special.

-Essays:
Common App: Wasn’t anything extraordinary to my standards. But I felt like they were very honest and true to me as a person, and conveyed myself in a very honest manner. All people I showed it too, including my counselor, said it was good. I’m generally proud of it 8-9/10
Why Northwestern and Carnegie Mellon: Felt these were very honest essays. Especially Carnegie Mellon. I was very enthusiastic about both of these schools 9/10
Vanderbilt: Not as great supplement, but still solid 8/10
Tulane + Michigan: My earliest, and weakest, applications. Pretty cheesy. 6/10

Interest:
Visited Northwestern, Vanderbilt (Just visited campus since there were no tours when we traveled to Nashville), and Michigan. Went to Information sessions for all of these schools when they came to my high school. Interviewing for UMich HAIL Interview.

Possible Hooks: Legacy at Northwestern - Mom attended for 3-4 years but never received a degree. Still stays connected with the alumni network though.

I understand I’m by no means a super competitive applicant, and that many of these schools are likely high reaches, but I was just curious and bored of waiting till March. Any feedback would help me understand what to expect. Thanks for reading!

As I’m reading over my post I realize I should clarify some things.

-I took the most rigorous curriculum my school offered. (10 Honors Classes, 2 AP Classes, 7 2-year IB DP level classes 3 HL, 3 SL + TOK)
-I finished my 7th semester with all A’s and one B, and 89.

-Forgot to include that I co-founded the film club at our school. Was promoted to president for the 2nd semester of my senior year.
-No, I didn’t make my bikes from “scratch”. I didn’t forge my own metal and weld bike frames in my backyard and code the computers myself or whatever. I did build them using different components online. You know what I mean, kinda.
-I got a campus tour of Northwestern. I also followed all of the schools on Instagram lol.
-I apologize for any grammatical errors since I’ve very tired after this past week. I swear I’m a better writer when I’m fully awake.

Thanks

You are a competitive applicant. Your stats are good and your ECs are great. Depending on your essays I think you could get into Michigan or Tulane

Your GPA is low for UMich CoE and NU while your test score is mediocre for them. Also, Umich does not superscore. What is your recalculated uwGPA without subgrades? They are both mid to high reaches for you.

Congrats on the Purdue acceptance. Purdue is the real deal. I know a high school valedictorian and a real, true life rocket scientist who attended. Your future is in your hands!

@billcsho Highest sitting is 1440. (650 R, 790 M). And grades at my school only show up as letters. No “-” or “+” or exact number grades were reported on my transcript if that’s what you meant. I just mentioned the 89 in my post because I was still annoyed that 1 percentage could’ve shifted my 7th semester GPA to a 4.0/ 6.0 weighted.
@NJDad68 Thank you so much!
@doorrealthe thanks for the feedback!

Purdue is a great school for engineering. Have you received their FA package? You should probably start looking at their dorm application process.
