Chance me for nyu and several other schools.

I'm mainly interested in getting into NYU's College of Arts and Sciences, but I'll add a few other schools I'm interested in as well.

Note:
I've been dual-enrolled at the local community college for about a year now. I assume these will be considered as AP classes, since they are college credits,
so for time's sake I will call them AP classes; I will also write my grade next to each one.
I'm taking a year off from school (for personal and academic reasons) and will essentially be 19 my freshmen year (not counting my current college credits). Basically, I'm graduating this month, but not applying to
college until this November; therefore, with my birthday being in May, I will be 19 when I go to an actual university. I'm not sure if this will be an important factor of
my acceptance, but I thought that I should add it anyway. It shouldn't be too harmful to my acceptance, though, as I'm sure there are several 19 year olds who apply.
Should I mention my reasoning for taking a year off? My reasoning is as follows:
I essentially slacked off most of my high school career, and didn't get my act together until about a year and a half ago. I've completed my entire high school curriculum
exceptionally. The reason for the few bad grades I got while dual-enrolled is because I was getting used to the classroom setting. Prior to this, I had a long period of time
in which time limits were not strictly forced. Now I'm used to it. Aside from that, my extracurricular activities are lacking. While I do have some, being the homeschooler that I am,
I don't get quite the opportunities as regular students. On top of that, I'd also like to travel a bit by myself. That's my reasoning. It may not be great, but I felt that it would help me in the
long-run, and I'm locked in now.

ACT: 34(35 Math, 36 English, 33 Reading, 31 Science) and an 11 on the writing portion of the ACT.
SAT II: 790 in Math I and 800 in Chemistry
Rank: Not sure, I was homeschooled from my sophomore year - present.

I can retake the ACT, SAT II's, and possibly take the regular SAT if need be.

AP classes:
Psychology - B
Chemistry - A
Macroeconomics - B+
World Civilzations/History I - B
World Civilizations/History II - A
English I - C+
English II - A

This puts my college GPA at a 3.4. The first half of my year dual-enrolled I was lazy and didn't do very well. As a result, I've had to retake a couple classes,
Chemistry and English II. I plan on retaking English I in the Fall. This should bring my GPA up to a maximum 3.63.

As far as regular high school classes go, my GPA is a 3.92. Average both out, and my average GPA is a 3.66 with the potential to jump up to a
3.77.

A few exceptional classes I've taken are Calculus I and II (I took Calculus I during last summer, but dropped it due to an excessive amount of
credit hours), Microbiology, Human Physiology, Russian, and Latin.

Extracurricular activities:
- Civil Air Patrol: I was in for about a year, and then quit. I had school plus I had recently gotten a job. I figured I would rather have money since
I no longer wanted to be in the military.
- Ice Hockey: Two years or so.
- Vounteered for the current governor's (of my state) political campaign
- Work: I had a job at a retail store for a little over a year, quit because I hated my boss and wanted to focus on school, and now I'm planning on getting
another one.
- Travel: This is my most prominent extracurricular, something that seperates me from most. I've traveled quite a bit. I've been to most of the U.S.
(including Alaska and Hawaii multiple times), 2/3rds of Canada, Mexico, Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, Russia, Finland, Sweden, the Netherlands,
Germany, Denmark, Estonia, and am planning on visiting the UK and Belgium soon.

A few extracurricular activities which I'm planning on partaking in and should be considered:
- I'm getting an internship at a law firm this Fall.
- Volunteer work at a hospital (estamating upwards somewhere around 300 hours or so).
Any other suggestions for EC's would be greatly appreciated.

I have some nice letters of recommendation as well.

A list of schools I'd like to know my chances at:
NYU (like I've said before)
Columbia
Vanderbilt
Cornell
UPitt
UPenn
Princeton
UCLA
University of Texas

Any advice is welcomed and appreciated. Anyone who chances me will be chanced in return. Also, and I'm not sure if the faculty at NYU will care,
but I was born in New York (although I currently do not live there).
Thanks!

EDIT: I also forgot to mention that I will be doing some tutoring (Math and ACT prep).

Don’t sweat the year off, colleges of all types are full of students who do something like that or have nontraditional routes into university. Plus it’s customary for many students in other countries to enter at that age, or even later.

NYU: should get in here no problem, their standards aren’t too high
Columbia: farish reach
Vanderbilt/Cornell: a small reach but you have a decent shot
UPitt: should get in
UPenn: farish reach
Princeton: far reach
UCLA: as an OOS resident your chances are reduced but you still have a decent shot
University of Texas: good chance but I think they require the sat although I could be wrong.

It is not a good idea to focus on travel in a college application. First, it does not differentiate you, many affluent kids are well traveled today. It just screams affluent kid, and those are not favored at top colleges.

The ivies are unrealistic with your grades. NYU maybe. You need to add solid matches and reaches to your list.

Hmm I think I misunderstood your app. What is your weighted high school gpa? You have time before your application, doing volunteering and boosting your ECS should get you into NYU imo, but the ivies are out of reach.

@ Waverly - Thanks, I was going to put that down on my application. Should I mention it loosely, or not mention it at all? If I remember correctly, I think NYU’s application said that I should, but I could be wrong.

@ Midget -Unweighted GPA: 3.92; Weighted GPA - 4.12 with the potential to become a 4.19 if I retake that English class, and it could jump up to a 4.26 if I take another class this Fall. Should I take an additional class? I don’t know if it would be taken into consideration, though, as I’m applying ED at NYU.

A revised list of colleges:
NYU
Cornell
Vanderbilt
UPitt
UVA
Penn State
UCLA

EDIT: Does my weighted GPA make a big difference? Does my current weighted GPA hurt or help me? What other ECs do you think I should take besides the ones I’ve currently said?

NYU = in
Cornell = good chance, but reach for everyone
Vanderbilt = slight reach
UPitt = not familiar
UVA = reach if out of state, prob get in if in state
Penn State = shot
UCLA = good shot

return the favor?
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1334048-chances-northwestern-please.html

i think your gpa is the only thing that makes some schools reaches, but i think youre in for sure at nyu!

NYU - definite
Cornell - reach
Vanderbilt - low reach
UPitt - not sure
UVA - not sure
Penn State - highish reach
UCLA - most likely (but I’ve visited over the summer and the environment in their admissions office was quite horrible, though that shouldn’t rule the school out)

where’s your SATs? and why not UT? It’s not a bad school.

I haven’t taken the SAT yet, but I’m thinking about taking it later this summer. I’m a bit confused about Penn State, though. Are you sure you’re not confusing it with UPenn? I’m not really sure why I took out UT. I lived in Texas for a while, I guess I really just want to go back to my home state (New York). I might still apply, though, but for now I really want to get into NYU; I’m applying ED there.

NYU - great match (for most schools)
Cornell - reach
Vanderbilt - low reach
UPenn- far reach (extremely difficult, I know many kids who attend/have applied)
UCLA - fair match

These are all i really have enough knowledge on to pair. but hey! maybe we will end up at UCLA together aha! Best of luck to you through your application and decision processes!

Penn State- match. From what I have heard from friends/family, it is not difficult to get into

Great Chance at NYU , Cornell and UPenn and UCLA will be reaches in my opinion and Vandy being somewhat of a reach

I also forgot to mention (I don’t know how I forgot) that I had an internship at Toshiba, too.
