I applied to Penn State University Park toward the end of November for undecided engineering. I was wondering how I would fare getting accepted because this is my number one and the suspense of waiting is killing me.
My stats are as follows
4.45 weighted gpa
3.85 unweighted
1,210 SAT - 590 math, 620 reading and writing
top 20% class rank
I took around 20 honors classes, maybe a few more and 2 AP courses, and I got A’s in both APs.
I participated in a few clubs, played soccer all four years and basketball and softball both freshman and sophomore year. I also work for about 15 hours a week at a local CVS. I think I mentioned that on my application…
I wrote my personal statement on my experience in Peru with two young girls at an orphanage and I think it was well written, but I might be a little biased.
So, do you think I stand any chance or should I keep from getting my hopes up? Thanks in advance!
I think you stand a very good chance. Your sat looks kind of low at least for engineering, but I don’t know much about the new sat and they value gpa a lot more than test scores (2/3 of consideration). I know that engineering is much tougher to get into there, though. If you don’t get in, you can ask to be reconsidered at undecided, but I have no idea how hard it is to get an engineering major after. I got accepted to Smeal last month with a 4.3 gpa and 31 act, so I think our stats are somewhat similar if you want to compare but we’re also different majors. I’m assuming you applied priority and will hear back by the end of the month. Don’t worry too much; there’s nothing you can do and you seem to be in pretty good standing. Good luck!
Your math score will hurt you for engineering. Is that your estimate score or did you take the test just once?
Everything else is OK for engineering but any math score below 650 will hurt for engineering. It might even be worth it to register for the sat and take it again this January.
