Chance me for Penn, Yale, Brown + other colleges/ivies

Hi all,

I have applied to (and seriously like) Penn, Brown, Columbia, Yale, Stanford, Williams (legacy through mom), UChicago, and Georgetown (graduate school legacy through dad). I was hoping that you all could chance me - I’d be happy to chance back! Thanks!

Stats:

SAT I: 2360 (800 M, 780 W and 780 R)
SAT II: Math 2 (790), Physics (750) - Math 2 was pretty upsetting, but I took it a long time after having finished precalculus with no preparation, and was banned from taking it again by my college counselor (he said retaking it would be like grade grubbing).
AP’s: Calculus BC (5) (self-studied), Spanish Lang (5), Statistics (5), Macroeconomics (5), Physics 1 (4), Microeconomics (4), US History (4)
Note: Out of the APs mentioned, only APUSH and AP Stat appear on my transcript. The rest were either self-studied entirely (Econ, BC Calc), or taken even though I was in non-AP classes (Physics 1 and Spanish).

GPA: 3.76 UW (really bad first semester of freshman year, and consistently mediocre english grades (B+/A-))
Senior Year Courseload: Honors English Lit, Non-Euclidean Geometry, Astronomy, AP Physics C, AP Computer Science, and Theatrical Productions: Fall Play

Financial Aid: No
Income Bracket: 300,000+
Ethnicity: Asian (Indian)
State: CA
High School: Prestigious, private high school (always on those “top high schools in the USA” lists).
Hooks: None except for Williams, where I have a legacy (thanks mom!)

Summer Activities:

Job at biotech firm, where I input the firm’s chemical and substance inventory into a newly created database for the state

Interning in Argentina’s national observatory

Educating impoverished kids in India - fairly well-established in areas where I tutor

UCLA Summer precollege program

Harvard SSP

Volunteer Hours:

60+ hours on the admissions board of a nonprofit that helps kids from poor socioeconomic backgrounds with very few resources meet their potential

40 hours as an intern in Argentina’s national observatory

25+ hours as an admissions officer for my HS (giving tours, working school fairs, open houses, speaking on panels, etc.)

100+ hours teaching and educating kids from slum’s and villages in India

I don’t even know how many hours from classmate tutoring through our school’s program, elementary school tutoring, and middle school tutoring - probably north of 100 easily.

EC’s:

Theater (have been in multiple productions)

Admissions Officer for School

On Admissions Committee for nonprofit that supplements the education of kids with very few resources

President of Debate club

Co-President of club that goes and tutors at a local middle school

Kung Fu (Black belt)

Major Awards: National Merit Commended, AP Scholar with Distinction. Not too much else. I’m a published poet, if that counts (poem was about finance).

Essays: Common App was about my love of math, and how I’ve pushed far ahead in a pure math curriculum to learn all that I can. I also talk about why math interests me, and how I want to get into math research. (8-9/10 imo).

Other:

In the additional comments section, I elaborated on serious health concerns within my family that caused me to be the “man of the house” for the first two years of high school (not financially, but in terms of taking care of everyone).

My hope, if accepted at one of these universities, would be to pursue a degree in math. While my senior year course load seems light in terms in “hardcore” math, that’s only because I have already finished Multivariable Calculus, Linear Algebra, and Differential Equations (the last two were taken at UCLA, where the professor was blown away that I was only 16 when I took them, considering I was in the top 5-7 enrolled kids). I also may have repeated a couple things across categories the categories I created above - might have overdone it in an attempt to be accurate about everything.

Thank you all so much!

You will find that most of the useful posters on this forum don’t like ‘chancing’ after apps are in. It’s either ego or anxiety, and neither should be fed. Go distract yourself until offers go out- & good luck

@collegemom3717 I’m definitely on the “anxiety” side. However, I think that all input will help put things into perspective. If people call me crazy for having applied to such places given my stats, then I’ll know to rein in my expectations. If people believe I have a legitimate shot, then I guess I can keep hoping. Nonetheless, your advice was useful and has been well received - thank you!

@collegemom3717 is absolutely right. Look, you’re smart. You know where you stand. I got into UChicago non-hooked EA with worse stats than you, but you’re qualified, and you already know that. You’ll find out soon enough.

Your GPA is rather low for those schools, though everything else is great. But for some schools such as UCs which ignore the freshmen year (which you did bad?), may be your GPA is fine. Now that I mentioned about UCs, why not considering UCLA which you took some classes in? Did not you like the school?

@uclaparent9 I actually did apply to UCLA (and UCB), I just decided not to mention it as I feel like I have a fairly good idea of my chances in that applicant pool. As for my GPA, im hoping that the additional comments regarding health problems and extremely difficult course load will make up for it - however, it is my weakest point, and worries me quite a bit! Thanks for your input: @jarrett211 @uclaparent9

Hey there my fellow Indian
Like @collegemom3717 said, mulling over these decisions is pointless. do something to get rid of that anxiety.
I kind of find myself in a similar predicament. My SATs are low by Ivy League standards (2170) despite of a good record in other areas but I’ve realised that there’s nothing I can do now but wait and pray. Because we Have given our best. If the colleges notice our tenacity and hard work, then great! If they don’t, well, we’ll thrive somewhere else. Either way, take a chill pill
And I hope we all get into someplace good
Keep us posted.
