Chance me for RD(with legacy) and help me answer a few questions about Williams? :)

Question: Are there a lot of internship opportunities if I am planning to major in Econ? Will I have to travel far from school in order to do those internships? I don’t really want to go into academia so I prefer not to do summer internship at the school. I prefer to go outside and get hand-on experience.

I am male Asian. Immigrant from Vietnam, poor, and first generation. My brother went to Williams about 4 years ago.

Opened a small online shop selling in-game items. Revenue about $30k and profit about $6k. Gave part of the money to my parents so they could pay their loans. Used some of the money to buy a bike so that I can do ECs at school.

Wrote a Java program to help with my game business. It calculates the market values of my items so that I always know roughly how much I have in my inventory.

Hired by other people to do different things. One of the things I did was translating documents such as business plans, book segments, and advertisements for websites and mobile apps. I made about $2100 doing this

President of ACT Prep Club: Prepare students for the ACT. Helped to bring a few people’s score up to a 29+

Your chances, certainly, are excellent – the combination of your academics, background, and connection to Williams probably give you a better than 50/50 shot.

There are probably not a ton of off-campus internship opportunities in the nearby area. Maybe a few, but the area is really not urban enough to offer a ton. But I wouldn’t let that dissuade you. You will have plenty of great internship opportunities in the summers and also opportunities for experiential learning during Winter Study. Check out some of the Econ Winter Study offerings last year as an example (and of course other departments offer other options that are an internship-like experience for the month of January):

Between summers and Winter Study, you’ll have plenty of opportunities for hands-on internships in econ/business if you are so inclined. Many recruiters come to campus for summer jobs, in particular in Econ-related fields. But during the semesters, those opportunities will be harder to come by; honestly, though, you’ll be so busy that ta time-intensive internship during the semester probably isn’t the best course of action in all events, at least until you are a senior.
