To consider: My family income is barely over the poverty line, and I also work to support my family. Also, I am an immigrant.
I want to hear my realistic chances. Also, what should I do to improve my chances? Thank you.
You have really good chances. I’m an incoming freshman at WashU and tbh even my stats weren’t as good as yours . I got a 2110 on my SAT and took no subject tests but I did volunteer a lot like you did (had over 400 hours by senior year). You didn’t post your ethnicity, but if you’re a minority you wld have an even better chance. WashU considers whether or not u need financial aid but doenst really look at how much financial aid u might need til after already accepting you. So the fact that u need assistance won’t look good on your app but the amount of money u essentially need doesn’t really matter at this point.
Washu’s acceptance process is really a hit or miss bc a lot of my classmates who were way more qualified than me and who had higher stats and didn’t need FA were rejected while I was accepted. If you do get in, you’re going to get basically a full ride based on your income level. My family income is well above poverty at about 90K and I’m paying less than 5K for the entire year at WashU.
Overall, realistically, I would say You have a good chance. But a lot of factors play into their acceptance- I’m pretty sure the main reason why I was accepted was bc I wrote a killer essay and I’m a black female because my stats didn’t even meet the WashU avg.
I heard that WashU cares how much interest you show in them, so if you want to increase your chances, you shld show interest. (I never really considered WashU seriously until after I got accepted so I never really demonstrated any interest to them so u cld also get in without showing any interest)
If you have any other questions, I would be happy to answer them!
@nineteeth123 thank you so much for the reply! I’m Asian, so I wouldn’t be considered as an underrepresented minority. Is it true that needing a lot of financial aid will be a negative factor for WashU? Because I would have thought that they would view it more favorably since I come from an extremely low-income family. Also, do you know of any ways I can demonstrate interest? What do you think plays the biggest factor for acceptance into the school? WashU has been one of my biggest dream schools, and I would LOVE to attend there.
@mythp1 They are need-aware, not need blind. They see your financial info, but I don’t see that affected acceptance. Low income is not really a negative or positive factor in acceptance, just know that you may want to work on their scholarships to show interest. Their financial aid is awesome, but doing the essays shows that you are interested, and you may get lucky!
As for demonstrating interest, you can send emails to your councilor, attend meets for when they visit your area, sign up for mailing and email lists, visit campus and do the interviews, and apply for as many of their scholarships as you can. WashU absolutely loves interest, and a person with imperfect credentials that showed interested is much more likely to get in than a person with perfect scores but ignored them.
Write a killer essay (maybe about your experiences and change you underwent coming to the US? They love diversity and different backgrounds), and show the love, and they will consider you.
