Chance me for Rice, UT Austin, some other Texas schools

Hi! I’m currently a junior and am looking at where I should apply to this year. It’s mainly Texas schools since I really like it here.

New Sat: 1470 (Will this hurt my chances at rice?) Will take again I think
710 verbal and 750 math

Sat 2s: Got a 740 on my practice US History (Pretty good in my opinion) and got a 760 on my practice Math 2 (Ik it’s trash). Will also take the Bio one.

UW GPA: 3.92 out of 4

Rank: top 10% (doubt it’ll be in the top 7%). I had a dip sophomore year. No excuses. Just lazy.

APs: Not really that good; bunch of 3’s and 4’s. No 5’s. Didn’t really care bout these that much.

courseload: 7 APs so far, gonna end with 11/12. Kinda on the higher side when loo

Major Awards: Nothing lol.

Extra Curricular

Science Olympiad (10th grade) - Really didn’t like it that much so I didn’t felt like I contributed that much. Might not even put it on the app. We went to state tho (Forgot where we ranked).

ACDEC (10th,11th, and 12th) - Went to state both years, really love doing it. Will continue to do so.

Tennis (JV 9th and 10th, Varsity 12th) - Unfortunately I couldn’t take tennis this year (schedule conflicts) so I had to make do with monthly tourneys and hitting with friends. Will colleges see this as a bad thing? Some regional and district level doubles awards (I’m not a good enough player for singles lol). Also, teach kids for a small fee and donate that money to charity.

Piano (12 years) - I’m really fitting the stereotype aren’t I? Anyway I do Piano recreationally, sometimes competitively, and I’m certified and all that crap.

BPA (Parliamentarian as of next year, 11th) - Poured my heart out on the web design project with my good friend and we absolutely crashed (in terms of rankings). I had fun doing it though so that’s all that matters. This really got me into technology and comp sci stuff btw (it’s great), so thanks, friend! We will prevail next year.

Job/Work experience and Summer Activities: Volunteering at 2 (maybe 3 starting from the summer) hospitals. Really cool stuff, I have access to confidential patient info which is really cool IMO, also work at a tech startup- started after the BPA stuff- code for them and brainstorm new ideas with them and other miscellaneous stuff.

Note: One hospital was super tricky to get into, like a sub 10% acceptance rate, should I mention it?

Community Service: Only really the hospital stuff. Probably got a hundred or so hours over there. I really don’t like doing random crap for the sake of hours. I’d rather watch youtube and/or procrastinate on homework.

I’ll probably get my recs from my ACDEC coach and my physics teacher. I talk about politics with my ACDEC coach a lot (We had a lot to talk about this year) and my physics teacher knows me as the guy who sleeps in class (lack of sleep) but works hard at home (We get along well).

Have no clue about essays, but I fancy myself a decent writer. I know these are important for Rice so I will try on those.

Major: Undecided
Ethnicity: Asian
Gender: Male
Income: 230,000 ish???
Hooks: Nothing, I’m an Asian male looking to get into STEM. I’m screwed.

Here are the schools I’m mainly looking at:
Rice ED (IK it’s a long shot)

Baylor (Will only attend if I get good aid)
UT Austin
UT Dallas
UT Houston (Honors College)
Emory(Also a long shot)

I’ll also probably apply to an Ivy League of my choice (most likely Brown) so I can hang that rejection letter on my wall lol.

Thanks for taking the time to read through this!

As a top 10% rank Texas resident, all Texas public universities except UT Austin are admission safeties for the campus, but not necessarily for your desired major or division. The same goes for UT Austin if you are in the top 7%; otherwise, it is a reach.

I’ll ask my counselor know my exact percentage, so I know if I should apply or not

looks like I’m eligible for auto-admit at UT Austin

You have good chances for UT Austin/ Dallas, UH honors and Baylor but I don’t know about Rice (Make sure to take some SAT subject tests or the ACT because they are required). Even if you get bumped out of top 7%, you still will most likely get into UT

If you are in the auto-admit category for UT Austin (and all other Texas public universities), then you just need to check (a) whether each is affordable (try the net price calculator), and (b) whether your major is a selective one at each campus (if it is, there is the possibility of being auto-admitted to the campus but not the major).

Will do. BTW what are my chances for Rice and Emory? Should i even bother

I’m a senior and I got into both Rice and UT Austin. Rice admission comes the LATEST but it was definitely worth the wait. Also applied to Baylor and got admitted as well.

Major for all schools applied: Biochemistry

UT Austin: Polymathic Science Honors
Freshman Research Initiative Applicant
CNS Scholarship

Rice: Trustee Distinguished Scholarship

Baylor: Presidential Scholarship

No financial need, so all aid is merit based.

Stats: New Sat 1460
Subject Test: Biology 770 Math II 650 (I guess I choked or something)
Rank: 1/113

AP: I live in rural south texas so nothing is really available aside from Dual Credit courses. With that being said, I will have approximately 42 college credit hours when I graduate. I will enter college as a sophomore (on paper).

Courseload: All college courses and work part-time as Co-op student.

Major Awards:
Numerous Speech & Debate awards at the state level
American Legion Oratorical Contest at State Level
Mathematics Awards
General Academics Awards
Track & Field Awards at the Regional Award (so far)

Extracurriculars:

Choir
LOTS of Community Service
Baptist Youth Missions & Ministry
Track & Field Varsity
Dance Team (Captain)
National Honor Society
Tutor
Competitive Mathematics
Policy Debate Team
Speech Team
Poetry Interpretation

I figure you can compare your stats with mine to see how you’ll fit. However, I believe the application is less about the stats and more about how you present them. When I could, I wrote some essays in verse to SHOW my poetry side. I told stories about the children that I ministered to. In all the things that I was involved in, I showed instead of simply talking about my activities. I’d say be creative and show your passion. Rice especially, loves demonstrated interest! Good luck!

Congrats on the acceptance! I think I’ll have a decent chance at acceptance after looking at your profile and the 4 people who got in at my school. Still, I’m not banking on getting in lol.
