Chance me for RPI/AMC Physician-Scientist BS/MD Program

ACT: 34 (36 E, 34 M, 36 R, 31 S, 06 Writing (aahhh!), 30 ELA, 33 STEM
SAT II: Chem 690, Math 2 720
GPA: 4.0 UW (school does not weight)
Taken 4 APs so far AP World History (3), APUSH (4), AP Bio (3) AP Chem (3) (AP scores are not great, i hope it doesn’t hurt me)
Senior year courses (6 or 7 APs): AP Eng lit, AP Econ (Macro and Micro), AP Physics I, AP Stat, AP Calc AB, AP Psych (I will have taken all 10 APs and every honors course offered by my school by the time i graduate)
School does not rank

LORs are great, my counselor rec is 9/10, my eng lit is 10/10, but my physics might be generic (7/10) (The problem is that RPI never downloaded my english teacher’s rec, and so they are basing my academic ability off of my physics teachers rec, which is probably very generic, cant do anything about that)

Major ECs:

I did research at Albany Med for 2 summers (740 hours total) investigating Parkinson’s Disease and Epilepsy, and I am on 1 paper in submission and 2 posters. I learned a lot and I definitely want to continue researching in college (preferably in his lab). Most importantly, the professor that I worked with at AMC wrote me an incredible letter of recommendation (he said that he has mentored 30 grad/undergrad/PhDs and that I am one of the best students he has ever had in the lab, even against past college students. I showed the letter to my advisor and he said it was one of the best and longest letters he has read, and he highlighted examples of my research work and intellectual curiosity).

I also shadowed a neurologist at AMC for close to 50 hrs. He taught me a lot of things, and I am excited to enter his profession. I performed some tests on patients with his supervision.
Volunteer work at another nearby hospital for 50 hours.

Co founded albany brain bee with the professor I worked with and with a bunch of people from AMC and UAlbany and SfN. I maintain website and do public outreach. The brain bee here attracts schools from all over the region (around 20). I also participated in the first year and came in 4th.

Other non-medical/science related (minor) ECs:
VP of class freshman year
Science Olympiad (won some medals at regional competition)
NHS
Natural Helpers (elected by peers as a person who is approachable to talk to about school/personal problems, receive yearly training)
Varsity tennis since sophomore year

Indian Male
NY (live near RPI and AMC)
Income around 190k

I think I have made it pretty clear through my application and essays that I am committed towards a career in medicine with a focus on research.

With the information I have provided, does it seem like I have a good chance of at least making it to the interview stage? I have not received the supplemental application from AMC yet (I think it is because my ACT scores were delayed, they only received them last week). I know they release supplemental applications and interview notifications in batches, so does anyone know around when the next batch(es) will be released? Thanks so much!

PS. Also, if you get a chance, plz chance me for Harvard, Brown UG and PLME, Duke, Vandy, U of Rochester UG and REMS, and U Mich. Thanks

BS/MD programs are as difficult as HYP admissions. Are you really willing to pay $70k+ a year for undergrad with the thought of med school in your future? With $190k you will get no financial aid at any school. Merit aid is highly unlikely.

I hear you, 190k is kinda difficult because im not in a position to pay but at the same time, I won’t receive much aid. I probably won’t have to worry about room and board because I can commute, and I am applying for scholarships, but we will see. I’m not “married” to the program, but I will look at my options when I get accepted to a few places. It is a very appealing program, however, and I save money by cutting out one year of study. Plus there is no stress of MCAT and medical school applications, and you are guaranteed a spot in Albany Medical College (if you can keep a 3.5). And i can continue researching in the lab that I have been working in for a couple of years now. I really like the people who work there and I like the projects that we are working on. So there are a lot of benefits for the price.

Anyway, please chance me !!!

@coolcool07 your EC’s seem good. Your standardized scores are a little on the lower side. I would say that AMC maybe a bit of reach but your EC’s and hospital hours will give you a chance. REMS and PLME are even more competive that RPI/AMC. If you are currently a HS junior you may still have a chance to be nominated as a Rensselaer medalist for a $25K/yr scholarship, or with your current stats you may be eligible for Presidential Scholarship of $18K/yr. also keep in mind keeping a 3.5 at RPI is not easy, it is one of the toughest grading schools in the country.

Thanks, @Empire007. I am a senior, and I was not nominated for the medal last year :frowning: . And yes, a 3.5 at RPI is definitely not easy lolol. I hope my ACT will pull me through. The subject tests and APs were a struggle. I know the average SAT score for the program is around 2250, but what is the average ACT score? Also, how much weight do they give subject tests?

@coolcool07 I don’t know what the average ACT is, my DC only submitted the SAT a couple of years ago. Also check this because memory is fading but I do believe you are required to submit SAT2 in Math along with SAT2 in a Science. You obviously already applied so there is nothing you could do about it now.

I don’t think it is good. Your SAT IIs. AP, and writing scores are not at the level of most accepted applicants. These programs are as hard to get into as Ivies. Plus RPI is a decent school, which probably makes the program harder to get into than some other BS/MD programs. Also, you are Asian.

It would be around ACT 34 (a guess). Your SAT 2 scores seem low. You have tough competition among Asian Indian candidates who apply for BS/MD. Do you have a safety school? You seem to be applying to all elite schools. Good luck to you.

Yeah i applied to Ualbany and got in with their presidential scholarship, which is really nice. I only have to pay 2k a yr out of pocket. Ualbany is a great school imo, but I applied to these other schools cuz you never know!
