Chance me for SDSU, UCSB, UCSC, CSULB, SJSU and SFSU

Hey guys, I am a rising senior and I just got my final grades back for junior year. I was wondering if any of you could chance me for the schools in the discussion title^.

I am also looking at certain private schools like Chapman, LMU, and Boston so if you could possibly chance me for those it would be appreciated (:

CSU UW GPA: 3.65
CSU W GPA: 4.03

Freshman Year:
Spanish I: A- (Sem 1), B+ (Sem 2)
Biology I: A- (Sem 1) A+(Sem 2)
World History: A (Sem 1) A (Sem 2)
Algebra 1: A (Sem 1) A- (Sem 2)
Honors English: B+ (Sem 1) A-(Sem 2)

I took Geometry over the summer and got an A+ in both semesters

Soph Year:
Spanish 2: B+ (Sem 1) B+ (Sem 2)
English: A- (Sem 1) B (Sem 2)
Honors Chemistry: A- (Sem 1) B(Sem 2)
AP U.S. History: B+ (Sem 1) B-(Sem 2) bad I know…
Honors Algebra II: B (Sem 1) B+ (Sem 2)
I am aware I had really really realllllyyy bad grades in my sophomore year which I am afraid will set me back. But the two A+s I got from Geometry are going to be calculated in.

Volunteer Work:
100+ hours (hospitals, tutoring, soup kitchens)

I created my own Speech and Debate program at my local library for young kids.

**Also my major is going to be public health (:

** My csu eligibility index is: 4604 and my SAT score is a 1380 (I am planning on retaking it later)

Oh! I also started the Model UN Club (opening next year)

UCSB will probably be a reach, but the others should be a match for you.

@ProfessorPlum168
What about other UCs, like Irvine or Riverside

I agree with @ProfessorPlum168 you have a solid chance at all the schools but UCSB will be the tough admit. UCI/UCD would be similar to UCSB while UCR is a great target school. UCLA and UCB will be Reach schools. Chapman and LMU are likely schools.

Some UC statistical data:
2018 Freshman admit rates for UC GPA of 3.80-4.19 capped weighted and not major specific:
UCB: 10%
UCLA: 9%
UCSD: 34%
UCSB: 38%
UCD: 41%
UCI: 38%
UCSC: 70%
UCR: 84%
UCM: 95%

2018 UC capped weighted GPA averages:
UCB: 4.23
UCLA: 4.23
UCSD: 4.16
UCSB: 4.13
UCI: 4.13
UCD: 4.11
UCSC: 3.96
UCR: 3.81
UCM: 3.71

2018 Data:
25th - 75th percentiles for SAT:

UCB: 1360-1540

UCLA: 1340-1540
UCSD: 1300-1520
UCSB: 1270-1500
UCD: 1220-1480
UCI: 1230-1490
UCSC: 1210-1450
UCR: 1130-1380
UCM: 1020-1280

Art course?

SFSU is not an impacted campus, but some majors are impacted. So the California resident EI threshold will be 2950 for non-impacted majors, but higher for impacted majors: http://future.sfsu.edu/impaction .

Historical EI thresholds at SJSU can be found here: http://www.sjsu.edu/admissions/impaction/

CSULB requires a minimum EI of 3200 for California residents to be considered: http://www.csulb.edu/admissions/freshmen-admission-eligibility

However, some majors may have additional criteria; CSULB may admit to undeclared instead.

Also, meeting CSULB’s minimum EI does not assure admission. Those in CSULB’s local area will have priority: http://www.csulb.edu/admissions/local-preference-admission-consideration .

From what I calculate, your UC unweighted is 3.64 and UC capped weighted and uncapped weighted is both 4.00. It’s definitely worth a try for UCSB and UCI and UCSD, though as you can see from the previous post that you are slightly below the median averages for GPA for UCI and UCSB. It will help if you can get a SAT score past the 75th percentile for a school’s SAT average.

Boston U, you have a decent shot at if you get you SAT score up into the 1450-1500 range. It is quite expensive though at $72K a year.

thanks so much, you guys. I have one more question if that’s ok, what would you say would be safeties for me? Also, are my extracurriculars enough? So far for safeties, I was going to go with CSUMB, CSUB, and other state schools.

@ProfessorPlum168 @Gumbymom @ucbalumnus
Sorry, I accidentally pressed send, but San Diego State is my top school its my dream. I want to go into psychology, specifically neuroscience.

SDSU gives very little information about frosh admission (i.e. no indication of historical EI thresholds by major), so it is hard to guess reach/match/likely/safety with it (all majors are impacted).

CSUB is a non-impacted campus where only nursing majors are impacted. So it should be a safety if you fulfill minimum CSU admission requirements and are apply to any major other than nursing.

For CSUMB, out-of-area applicants applying to impacted majors needed higher EI as listed at https://csumb.edu/admissions/impaction . This is historical, so EI thresholds may change based on applicant demand.

For Safeties, I would say SJSU since the EI for Public Health this year was 3000. SFSU would be another safety school, so I do not think you need to add CSUMB or CSUB to your list.

SDSU’s 2018 stats were 3.93 CSU GPA and 1264 SAT so the target EI would 4408 (not major specific). I think SDSU would be a good Target/Match school for you.

I would add either Cal Poly SLO (Public Health or Psychology), Cal Poly Pomona or CSU Fullerton to your list. If you are interested in Neuroscience, then UC’s might be better options.

@Gumbymom thanks so much! I’ve seen you on other forums haha, you give great advice!

Hey again, I was just wondering, I am also strongly considering UC Irvine and UC Davis. Would you mind chancing me based on my stats?

UCI and UCD would be slight Reaches since your UC capped weighted is below average. UC’s tend to be more GPA focused but stats alone will not get you in so all the subjective parts of your application will contribute to your chances. Definitely worth the time to apply.
