Chance me for Stanford

Hi I'm an Indian student currently in the IB (grade 12)

My Ib score has been 42, 42,42 for my 3 terms so far. Subjects are Maths, Physics and Chem HL and English, Hindi and Economics SL.

SAT 1: 2260 superscore (Math:800, CR:720, W:740)
SAT 2: Math, Physics, Chemistry and Literature. havent taken any yet.

My class rank is 1 out of 70 students

I took 9 subjects at the IGCSE level and got all 9A*'s. Additional Maths was on of my subjects.

EC's:
Conducted a research project on Water Purification and wrote a project report. I'm aware of several water initiatives currently active by Princeton students so hopefully that helps

I also conducted research and wrote a paper on Nanotechnology and its application in water purification

I conducted a process optimisation study at a health care clinic and implemented methods to reduce patient cost and increase footfalls

I have been a member of the student council for 3 years now

I reached the world finals of The Odyssey of the Mind competition in Maryland in 2010.

I was the Head of Logistics at several MUNS and have also taken part as a delegate

I have attended and won many quizzes, all at an inter school level.

I started an Engineering Club at school.

Stanford: Low Reach-Reach

Stanford strongly recommend 2 SAT2. If you have not taken any, it would be late for EA.

Stanford is a low reach to a reach… Stanford is a reach for everyone, even the ones with the best grades

Mine please?: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1567285-chance-transfer.html</a></p>

I took Math and Physics in October. Getting my scores tomorrow! :)

@billscho. You are giving MISINFORMATION about SAT2s…they recommend but it is NOT REQUIRED…as a matter of fact, my K2 (freshman) knows of 3 students in K2’s class personally who did not take SAT2s who got in because of their exemplary achievements that can be seen without them…there are many ways Stanford admissions can tell without requiring your SAT2s…

…moreover, Stanford “may” actually prefer those outstanding “creme de la creme” students who didn’t take SAT2s…since they are more LIKELY to attend Stanford once admitted…since they won’t be applying to OTHER similar schools who require them…think about it…and you will know what I mean.

OP. You are a very competitive applicant…whether you apply REA or regular. Good luck!

^ Read again what I said. It is not mis-information. I clearly said it is recommended (not required). Don’t quote special cases and make a generalization out of it.

From Stanford admission FAQ:

It is recommended, not required, and yet they provide so much details about it (e.g. at least 2 and Math2 is preferred).

^^you wrote “STRONGLY recommend 2 SAT 2” and then followed with “if you have not taken any, it would be late for EA”…whether he took SAT2s or not has no relevance to him applying EA…and it seems it is a moot point…since he took them anyways…

From Stanford’s website:

…I don’t know whether your kid is applying to Stanford this year or not…but, I get the impression he/she is…

…let’s not try to eliminate the competition by dissuading them from applying when they are clearly competitive applicants…like the OP is!

I mean if you have not taken any SAT2 yet, the SAT2 score would be late for EA. What is wrong with that? As Stanford has a high rejection rate for REA, you really want to make your best case before EA deadline or wait for RD. I never discourage the OP to apply. Don’t change the topic.
For school like Stanford, you would take every possible step to be standing out from other applicants. In any case, SAT2 is clearly recommended by Stanford. You may think it is not “strongly” even though they spell out all the details. But that is your interpretation.

I still don’t see which part is MISINFORMATION.
See other website that also agrees Stanford “strongly recommend” subject tests:
https://www.nationalappcenter.com/gotocollege/campustour/undergraduate/1000/Stanford_University/Stanford_University2.html?sbar_submitted=yes&sbar_search=</a></p>

By the way…many TOP brilliant students who only take ACT exams (particularly from the non-coastal states like the Midwest/middle states) get into Stanford just fine…thank you…

Other admission consultants said Standord “strongly recommend” subject test too:
[Top Colleges and Universities » Stanford](Stanford – Top Colleges and Universities)
http://www.internationalcounselor.org/archives/500</a>
http://www.admissionpossible.com/Testing.html</a></p>

If you think you can stand out from other candidates without SAT2, that is fine. Just like there are students getting in with ACT at 30, but I would not tell others that ACT 30 is enough for Stanford. For the same reason, I would not tell people there is no need to take SAT2 as it is indeed recommended. Perhaps all these consultants or counselors are giving MISINFORMATION too. LOL

^^why are you pulling at straws and using ACT scores of 30 (where are you getting these numbers from?) for your ridiculous argument…there are plenty of TOP kids who score very high on their ACT scores that are equivalent to TOP scores on the SAT…once, again, I will reiterate, SAT2s are ONLY recommended…it is optional…

…if your son/daughter gets rejected from Stanford…it won’t be due to their having or not having SAT 2s…I hope you understand that. LOL

^^ So you still did not answer the question on where is the MISINFORMATION?

It is fine to express your idea and you don’t have to take SAT2 if you are applying to Stanford. I am just telling the OP that most counselors and consultants considered it as “strongly recommended” (except you if you are one). LOL.

Note that “optional” is a neutral term, while “recommend” means a lot more than optional. So do not MISINFORM other people.

Previous discussion showed 95% of accepted students at Stanford took SAT2. Feel free to be the 5% if you want to.
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/stanford-university/423677-sat-subject-tests-does-highly-recommended-really-mean-required.html</a></p>

Official document was linked when the thread was fresh.

^^since you seem to have INVESTED so much into your child’s education with all the consultant fees and such…I hope you won’t get disappointed with your child if they don’t get into Stanford or its counterparts…and become the typical bitter parent…who whines about the application process being unfair…because there is no rhyme or reason why Stanford often chooses someone with a lower score but with outstanding “wow” factor over a boring stereotypical “X” student who does everything that their parents tell them to do by getting good grades and test scores…along with the usual laundry list of ECs…

…schools like Stanford and Harvard look for the INTANGIBLES…beyond test scores and grades! They ENJOY rejecting kids with perfect scores and valedictorians who are one-dimensional! I hope this is not a laughing matter now…

Good luck to your applicant child!

i think its a bit silly to make a fuss out of something so trivial.

But from the data, it’s safe to assume it’s a ridiculously good idea to take the SAT2 if you aim for acceptance at Stanford.

Not necessary.

Horribly, awfully, and disgustingly recommended.

5% of 2200 = 110 students were accepted without SAT2s. That’s a good number…not just anecdotal I’d say…

Good luck to those 5% of 5.6%. LOL.

C’est la vie…

Bumpity bump
