My dad studied and got a PhD degree from Stanford. I’m not sure this counts as a legacy because he isn’t an active alumni.

Areas of Interest:

Statistics, Bio informatics, CS, EE

Congratulations on your achievements so far. I can’t chance you but believe your application will get a serious look. Legacy definition at Stanford includes undergrad and grad, so you should also get a legacy bump Admissions considerations for children of alumni or donors - Office of the Provost

Make sure to have a balanced list that includes some match schools, as well as at least one affordable safety. Are you looking at ex-US schools as well?

Thank you for the comment. Yes, I’m also applying to SNU and probably going to get accepted according to our alumnis’ previous results. But still my priority is US colleges such as Stanford, MIT, Berkeley, etc. Do you think it is worth to apply restricted early on Stanford?

If Stanford is your top choice, REA is likely worth it, but only you can be the arbiter of that. Applying REA to Stanford will prohibit an early action app to MIT (or any other private college, and of course you won’t be able to apply ED anywhere). Definitely apply EA to any public schools on your list that have an early action round (UMichigan, UVA, et al).

It may be unspoken but I believe Stanford expects legacies to apply REA.

What is the difference between REA and early action round? Doesn’t REA prohibit applying to any other colleges?

Stanford is single choice early action so a student can only apply to Stanford early (no ED or other REA). He/She can apply to other schools regular decision.

From Stanford’s website,

  • It is Stanford policy that, if you apply to Stanford with a decision plan of Restrictive Early Action, you may not apply to any other private college/university under their Early Action, Restrictive Early Action, Early Decision, or Early Notification plan.
  • In addition, it is Stanford policy that you may not apply to any public university under an early binding plan, such as Early Decision.
  • If you apply to Stanford under Restrictive Early Action, you may apply to other colleges and universities under their Regular Decision plan.
  • If you apply to Stanford under Restrictive Early Action and your application is deferred, you may apply to another college’s Early Decision II plan.

Thanks a lot

Do you have a source for that?

We all know there are schools who directly state they only consider legacy in their early round(s).

But, since Stanford is pretty clear on other aspects of legacy definition, it’s curious they wouldn’t address REA vs RD if there is a difference in how they are treated.

No, I don’t. We are not legacy but I thought I remember them mentioning it at their admissions presentations. I could be wrong but OP should look into it.
