Chance me for Stern: High test scores, no business extracurriculars

<p>Hi everyone!</p>

<p>Something that worries me about applying to Stern is that I haven't shown a lot of interest in business with regards to my extracurriculars. I'm not in FBLA, haven't interned at an investment firm, etc. Plus the only AP test I've failed (2) was in Macro (the teacher we had did not know what she was doing and had never taught, or gotten a degree in economics. Basically she gave up 3 weeks into the school year)</p>

• Senior Year Course Load: AP Micro, AP Spanish Language, AP Environmental Science, AP Comparative, AP English Literature, Discrete Math, Humanities, Health (Online), Independent Research
• Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.):National AP Scholar, NMSF, National Spanish Exam gold-medalist, lots of state awards for foreign language. </p>

<p>• Extracurriculars : SHH (officer), School Newspaper (managing editor, award-winning), Envirothon Team (first place in state), Young Democrats (secretary), Beta Club, Math Team
• Job/Work Experience: just some informal babysitting
• Volunteer/Community service: work as a mentor for Hispanic elementary school students, will volunteer for a local community center helping Hispanic families</p>

<p>• Essays/ Recommendations:
o I’m deciding between several possible topics. I’ll try to take risks and not pull a “How my dad influences me”. My essays for school generally turn out well, but we’ll see. Hopefully good…
o My Spanish teacher already volunteered to write my recommendation so I think it should be solid. I’m going to ask my science teacher to write the other one. He loves me but can be a bit scatter-brained (he has written for a lot of ivy admits though)
o I go to a large public high school so our guidance counselors aren’t exactly sung for their detailed, personal recommendations. She likes me, but I’m not expecting anything stunning.</p>

<p>• School Type: Public (2000+ students). Pretty competitive (8 kids last year got into HYPSM, around 10+ others got into other top schools (Cornell, Duke, UChicago...)

• Income: around 100,000
• No Hooks</p>

<p>Well since your EC’s don’t really indicate business, you should somehow indicate why you want to do business in your essays. Your scores are great and well qualified for Stern but why business if you have no interest?</p>

<p>Either way, I think you’re pretty set with your test scores…</p>

<p>You have amazing stats, and I wouldn’t worry TOO much about not having any business ECs. If anything, Stern is looking for leaders and those who excel in what they do, regardless of the field.</p>
