Hi everyone. I've applied to all of the UCs (although my dream UC is UCI) and I was wondering if someone could give me some reasonable chances for them all. My numerical stats are as follows:

-GPAs:

-9th: 2.71
-10th: 2.87
-11th: IB average of 32
-12th: IB average of 34.

Now before anyone fires off about the horrid 9th and 10th grade GPAs (I know that they are pretty awful), I also have the following IGCSE exam grade qualifications:

-Math Extended: B
-Physics: A
-Biology: A*
-Chemistry: A*
-History: A
-Geography: A
-English Language: A*
-English Literature: A

-The Hague International Model United Nations for 10th and 11th grade.
-The Global Issues Network Conference (with 50 schools) for 11th grade.
-I run and maintain two online facebook groups for biology and chemistry.
-Attended and represented my school in inter-regional debates for Global Issues.
-National Honors Society
-Chemistry Tutoring.

Misc:

-Published an article in a magazine for Third Culture Kids

So far, from UCI, I have received a supplementary questionnaire asking for additional information to enhance my application. What does this mean for me? As for the admissions essays, the last notion that I got was that they were pretty good and sufficiently unique (subjective though).

Since UC Irvine has a pretty low acceptance rate (45.4%), I don’t know your chances. Can you calculate your total GPA?
If they take your superscore, except in Math your SATs fall within or nearly at the 75th percentile for UC Irvine, so that will help. I would say it’s either a really low reach or a match, but I’m not exactly sure.
Other matches would be UC Santa Barbara (maybe), UC Riverside you’re basically in, in/match for UC Santa Cruz, and in for UC merced. UCLA and UC Berkeley, however, would be really high reaches.
Chance me back:

Your SAT isn’t that good, and some of your EC’s are irrelevant (i.e. the Facebook group) but it looks like you’ve made a major improvement over the years which is good. It’s also kind of cool that you’ve written a magazine article. Overall, you stand a chance but I can’t make any promises.

you’re in at santa cruz and merced for sure

irvine, im not really sure because im not familiar with the IB grading system. UCs only count your 10th and 11th grades, so your 9th grade ones are irrelevant to them.
good luck though

For Irvine, it is true that under normal circumstances that they will probably consider the 10th and 11th grade scores. Although, for the UCI supplementary questionnaire, they ask for my 12th grade GPAs so far. This questionnaire is meant to supplement my application, so in this case, I think that those the 12th grade marks are going to be considered.

ah, i would imagine you have a good chance then, with your 12th grades

in this thread, i read about the supplement, and one of the posters said this, im not really sure about the validity of the statement:

The Irvine questionnaire is IDENTICAL to the one UCLA sent two weeks ago. It does mean that you are in a borderline situation, and the adcom is giving you the opportunity to expand upon your strongest talent/achievement, and also to discuss any home, medical, or financial circumstances that might have cause your GPA or SAT to be a little lower that it otherwise might have been in the absense of those circumstances. They are looking for tangible reasons for two readers to change your intial score average (on the Berkeley scale of 1, 2, 2.25, 2.5, 2.75, 3, 4, 5), from 2.75 (marginal non-admit) to 2.5 (marginal admit). In particular, they are looking for evidence that in a more stable environment, you will likely persist toward graduation. The last thing they want is to admit a person they’re not sure can withstand the competitive pressures of a highly ranked Uni that doesn’t have any budget for hand-holding.

I think you have a good chance at those schools if you get your GPA up. If your transcript shows a positive trend, it shows that you’re willing to work hard, improve, and be the best you can be. Good ECs.

Well your IGCSE grades are really good so that should make up for your low GPA… otherwise I think your SAT score is fine too for UCI… so I think you have a good chance
