Chance me for these schools as an international transfer student

Hi everyone, I'm a junior student from China, with college GPA of 3.47/4.00, that is a top 5-10% rank (basically no grade inflation in my school), major is computer science now, and is in want of changing that to econ after transfer.

Current institution is Tongji University, which is located in Shanghai, and is hopefully among the most selective 10 universities in China, though is on its way downward these years. High School GPA is about 3.8/4.0, rank in high school is 4/800

Extra-curricular activities include internship with a management consulting firm called A.T.Kearney, at its Shanghai office and another one with Morgan Stanley, basically some technology works.....Both are not summer intern but only part-time intern during the college semester

Also some other extra-curricular things like students club...TV program shooting..

Don't have SAT/ACT as an international student, so just have to apply to those who don't demand SAT/ACT scores

TOEFL is 101, with listening 24, writing 24, speaking 23, reading 30

Having submitted applications for 3 schools' spring transfer admission, I'm extremely worried of being rejected, because someone told me my TOEFL score sucks hard. They said one above 105 is needed. But I thought 100+ is ok, that's the reason I didn't take the test another time before it's too late. I hope I've made it clear......Now I'm so down because I think I'm gonna ruin it just because of the ****ing TOEFL 101. Desperately need your help to get a sense of my chances. With all your thoughts, I think I can understand my position then make future plans.

So I've submitted application for

1) Cornell (Econ)

2) UMich (Econ)

3)UVA (Econ)

And I'm going to apply before 15th Oct to

4) NYU (Econ)

5) UIUC (Econ)

What're my chances at these schools?? Does a 101 TOEFL kill my chances? If so, what should I do????

Thanks you all in advance, I'm desperately need help!!

Desperately in need of your help! Pls!

A 100+ TOEFL score basically fulfills the requirements for any college you apply to, I haven’t heard of a single college that requires anything higher (I may be wrong here since there might be a few exceptions). 110+ is ideal, but I think the TOEFL is evaluated more at a pass or fail basis. As long as you’re above a certain score, it doesn’t kill your chances.

What I think may be a bigger problem is that you haven’t taken the SAT or ACT yet. I am almost certain that Cornell requires standardized test scores, and the other schools on your list may too… so you should check their websites.

For SAT/ACT issues, I’ve checked websites of these schools, they indeed DO NOT require an international student to submit, if he/she doesn’t have one. I’m pretty sure of this, but thanks for your reminder as well.

For TOEFL things, one of my friends, who is currently going to UMich said the same thing as what you mentioned. He told me 100+ with all sub-scores 23+ is pretty fine. But one stanford dude said a TOEFL below 105 is hurting my chance badly cuz competition is fierce, so you’re below 105 while all else above it, you definitely is overshadowed…And this Stanford guy told me that my risk is high

Overall, How are chances for me at these 5 schools? Should I apply to something worse than UIUC to get secured?

Thank you, so good to see your reply…I’m so down and anxious…

PUMP! Hope more people can come and express their ideas on my situation.
I’m really like overwhelmed by anxiety these days…

Yeah seems I was wrong, I was looking at the international students admission pages, which say the SAT is required, but not for transfer students.

Don’t worry too much about your TOEFL (maybe for Stanford it might be a very slight problem but it certainly isn’t for the other schools you’re applying to as far as I know).

Anyways, I think you should look at a couple other schools as well, since all of the schools you’re applying to are pretty selective. Consider applying to some of the following:

Boston University
Boston College
U of Maryland
Penn State

There are several good schools for Economics, these are just a few off the top of my head that aren’t so difficult to get into.

Thank you! I’ll try one of the listed as well. Maybe Boston College I think

But I also wonder how’s my chance at those I want to go to, say UMich

Because if I can’t make it into great places, it’s not worthwhile to bother transferring. My current college isn’t that bad…

I’ll appreciate it much if anyone can chance me in a quantitative way, try to quantify the possibility of an offer! or in a “Reach-Match” manner? Thanks!

Dyson (Cornell) - reach
NYU Stern - reach
UMich Ross - low reach
UVA - low reach
UIUC - high match

^this is just my opinion and it’s a little difficult to chance you without standardised test scores.

Thank you Truust, But I’m not applying to business programs in those schools! ALL OF THEM ARE ECONOMICS PROGRAM in Art&Science Colleges!..

PUMP! Still hope to get more advices
