My kiddo is at Deerfield. Her brother is applying this year as a repeat 9th grader. Her advisor said they will be admitting fewer upper grade students because they don’t want classes getting too big. She entered as a repeat 11th grader this year, there were approximately 20ish new Juniors. 10th grade had approximately 40 new students. If you repeat 10th you will have a greater chance at all schools.
Deerfield does not ask for personal recommendations.
I do not know how many applicants per grade at Deerfield. The acceptance rate overall last year was 12-13%. Reduce that if you need FA, reduce that if you do not have a “hook”. Is the GPA out of 4.0? Best advice, know why you want to go to each school, what you will contribute, make your essays stand out and cross your fingers. Deerfield students, from what I have seen, are all smart, well spoken, open to new experiences, self advocating and multi-talented.
For the schools you are applying to, you are NOT an URM. Period.
It is possible that you could be regarded as potential contributing to diversity based on your socioeconomic or geographical background. Possibly.
Academics are about more than just grades. What is the academic rigor at your current school? I see no mention of AP courses, for example. Or weighted vs unweighted GPA. Maybe your current school isn’t particularly rigorous… in which case it is a better strategy to apply as a repeat 10th grader.
Why are you applying to these prep schools? I am applying to these prep schools to gain real world experience. As someone once told me “failure is the first step to success.”
I don’t mean to sound rude, but boarding school is NOT the “real world”, or at least the real world for 99.9% of the population. And if you are applying for FA, I assume you are in the 99.9%. We are FA. And I do not know anyone who lives like the majority of my kiddo’s friends. From their clothes to trips to homes, and connections etc. It may open doors for you and provide opportunities you never would have had otherwise, but it is far from the “real world”.
If you really want to go to BS you need to add schools to your list. Even a school like Loomis is going to be hard for 11th grade because any excellent athlete applying for 11th will bump you and there just aren’t that many spots.
Your gpa is low for top schools. You are an orm and you don’t have a hook. 11th grade is a brutal entry point. Junior year is absolutely brutal in top schools. Let me say that again. BRUTAL.
Add schools. Consider applying as a repeat 10th grader.
Don’t be discouraged by these comments, there is a school out there for you! Is it one of these “top” schools for 11th grade? I would say that’s a super long shot, especially needing FA and ORM. That said, there are so many schools out there that would be excellent and you could be a great fit. Lots of great schools out there, go beyond the sparkly names!
11th grade is a very tough year to get accepted, I agree with others that you should consider repeating a grade which is common and not looked down upon.
Good luck!
We’re trying to encourage @king_brawl to be realistic.
@king_brawl isn’t in the top 10% at a school with limited opportunities, if I’m reading between the lines correctly. And they are fixated on the “top prep schools” because that will give them “real world experience”. They are adamant that only top schools are of interest, and they won’t entertain the notion of repeating the 10th grade grade.
I am very disturbed that they cannot articulate WHY any one of these schools would be a good match.
