I am absolutely in love with Duke. I was disappointed that I was deferred but it's still my top choice. I know GPA is low, but with EC's and test scores and personal stuff (essays, recs), how do you guys think I will do? I got straight As first quarter senior year in an incredibly rigorous curriculum. What do you think about other schools? Will chance back!

Senior year classes-
AP Spanish Lang, Multivariable Calculus, Physics 2, AP English Lang, History elective

[] ACT: 33 (34 superscored)
[] GPA: 3.7 Weighted, I'm taking the most rigorous curriculum possible
SIGNIFICANT upward trend -sophomore year 3.35 junior year- 3.8, senior year first quarter 4.55 weighted
[] Rank: School doesn't rank
[] EC's: SGA President (Senior Year), Junior Class President, Editor-in-Chief of Newspaper, Yearbook Editor, Captain of Cross Country Team, Tour Guide, Ambassador of Prestigious Summer Travel Program, Student Conductor/Director of show band which was nominated for national award, supporting male lead in musical, been playing piano for 11 years, participated in many state competitions. 200+ Hours of community service in Spain, Morocco, Peru. did Summer internship in Boston last july

Subjective:
[] Essays: very good memorable essay about music and effect on me.
[] Teacher Recs: Very close with teachers, great recs
[] Counselor Rec: great
[] Hook (if any): legacy at Duke and Tufts

Location/Person:
[] State or Country: Maryland
[] School Type: Private, VERY competitive
[] Ethnicity: White (50% Lebanese.. so Middle Eastern too)
[] Gender: Male

If you were going to get into Duke you would have gotten in ED. You need to consider the deferral as a polite legacy rejection. The results at Duke make Dartmouth highly unlikely and WashU unlikely. You have a good shot at most of the rest with Rice and Tufts as reaches. Maybe the legacy will pull you in at Tufts.

I would like to know the unweighted GPA anyways. If a very rigorous curriculum only lands you a 3.7, your unweighted GPA could be enough to scare off most schools. Everything else looks good though.

My UW GPA is a 3.4. @Waverly- What you are saying could definitely be the case, but on the other hand there has been a consistent upward trend in my grades, so couldn’t the deferral also be to see if I can keep up my grades for the 2nd trimester?

Please other people chance I will chance back.

In my opinion no. One more term of good grades won’t make a difference at a Duke level school. Your high school record simply isn’t strong enough, even as a legacy. The upward tnd is overrated and often such a trend says “i was a slacker”, the worst possible message.

What is possible is a strong finish in high school, a strong year or 2 at the best college you get into and then transferring.

I think the other commenters have given you good feedback. And I hate to say it but I think you should get over Duke, at least for now. Visit a few of the other schools with as open a mind as you can. Maybe ask yourself “what is it about Duke that I love so much?” Try to break it down into tangible features–chances are a lot of your other choices have some of the same attributes that makes Duke so appealing. You have a lot of excellent schools on your list. You will be happy wherever you end up. Good luck!

Sounds pretty much like what other said…your ECs are great but if you listed yourself as a white male it will be tough at the upper schools. Don’t count on Duke, if you had legacy its pretty unlikely for regular. However, there is always a chance. You could try sending an email to admissions with any significant updates and making it clear Duke is still your first choice. Otherwise, you’re going to get in to a lot of these schools so be happy!
