Chance me for UChicago please! I'll chance back!

Hi everyone!

My Info:
I am a white female from Michigan

GPA: 3.989 unweighted-just one -A

My school does not class rank but I'm sure I would be in the top 10% at least

I take the most rigorous classes possible (at my school AP's are not available until junior year)
I am currently taking:
French 4 AC (AC=honors)
American Studies AC
English 11 AP
Chemistry AP (includes a lab period and a lecture period)
Psychology
Math Analysis AC

All A's going into 2nd semester!

I plan on taking these next year:
Physics AP
Humanities AC (rigor of an AP, English and History)
Philosophy
Calculus AB AP
French 5 AP
Trailblazers (an in-school elementary student mentoring program)

My extracurriculars:
3 seasons of Rowing (freshman and half of sophomore year) I might go back next year as a coxswain and if I do I will letter

One season (I have been skiing since age 3) on my school's newly established ski racing team (i'm coming back next year)

I teach Sunday school for 4-5 year olds at my church (I am also involved in vacation bible school over the summer)

I am an active member of NHS and Key club

I am a three year member and treasurer of French Club (hopefully president or VP next year)

I volunteer regularly at the soup kitchen through my church

I just started a club called Once Child at a Time that raises money to sponsor African children. So far we have a pretty good start

I also have a job cleaning a jewelry store that I have held for 2 years. I plan on working there and getting another job over the summer

my extracurriculars are a bit scattered but I plan on marketing myself as a well rounded individual haha

My test scores:
I have only taken each test once (i plan on testing again for sure) and i did not prepare for either (it was intentional, I was setting a benchmark score)

ACT: 30 ( i can probably raise it 2 or 3 points)
SAT: 1950 (I know I can get it up to at least 2100. I've been studying VERY hard! If not I just wont submit it)

So how do I look? Any help is greatly appreciated

Also, is there anything I can do to improve my changes?

Schools:
UChicago (Top Choice)
UPenn (Top Choice)
Boston College
NYU
Columbia
Brown
University of Michigan

UChicago (Top Choice): Low/Mid Reach
UPenn (Top Choice): Mid reach
Boston College: Low Reach
NYU: High Match/Low reach (test optional)
Columbia: Mid Reach
Brown: Mid Reach
University of Michigan: High MAtch (Instate)

I apologize if my estimates appear harsh. Unfortunately, with each passing year, it has become increasingly difficult to gain admission to univeristies ranked in the top 20 or 30 by the USNWR. With this increase in applicants, it is imperative that you have the test scores to match your GPA to merit serious consideration at the schools you mention above.
U Chicago recently experienced a large increase in applications for the 2010-2011 academic year, as did U Penn. To increase your chances at these two schools, I would definitely apply ED to Penn and EA to Chicago. Ideally, you would need around a 2200 SAT/33 ACT to be competitive for these schools. Boston College likes to see three SAT subscores in the 700s range, which would complement your GPA nicely. For NYU, you might want to submit a combination of SAT II/AP scores in lieu of SAT/ACT scores if your retakes do not go as expected. With your current test scores, Brown and Columbia would be extremely difficult to get into, unless you forgot to mention some musical ability or “Project to Save the Hungry in Africa.”
All in all, remember that your transcript is the crown jewel of your application, so keep up your percentile rank through senior year. Over 90 percent of Penn Freshmen ranked in the top ten percent of their class, so remember to take this into account. I would suggest adding a few safety schools such as MSU to your list, as U Michigan is too prestigious to use as a back up. Best of luck!

Thanks! Do schools still consider AP test scores if they don’t give you credit for it?

Anyone else?

55 views and only one chance? I promise I don’t bite! I will chance back!

Columbia, Chicago, and Penn are high reaches until you raise your scores. Don’t forget about Subject Test scores.

(On a side note: It’s probably not best to take the tests for real just for benchmarking purposes; that is what at-home practice tests are for.)

I believe that except for the University of Michigan, your other college interests are reaches.

Your rigorous schedule alongside service show a beautiful combination that looks good, but relatively cliche. If you can write great essays about how you grew, or how it correlates to your passions then it may go well :)

If you do well on them, I think you should tell them your AP scores. A couple of 5’s and 4’s don’t look bad at all :D

If you can raise your ACT those two points, then do it. It will work for your application  [I think it’d be more beneficial to raise your ACT score, because it seems you are already scoring a tiny bit better on it than the SAT]

Chance back?

UChicago (Top Choice): Reach

Boston College: High match
NYU: High Match

Brown: Reach
University of Michigan: match

Thanks! If I raise my ACT scores to a 32 or a 33 (which I think is do-able) will that make me much more competitive?

^ Yes, the higher your scores, the better.

yes, of course 32-33 ACT scores will make you more competitive :)

you’re sort of a shoo-in at NYU, Boston C, and UM. I’d say Brown and UPenn are mid-reaches and UChicago and Columbia are high reaches because both of the latter schools love really unique candidates. I’m not saying you’re not unique, but if you showed your passion in your essays and if you have great recs, you definitely have a chance :)

and could you chance me back? lol. i have a thread posted in this forum for Columbia.

I’ll just chance you on the schools that I had considered I was applying.

UChicago (Top Choice) Possibly
UPenn (Top Choice) Doubtful
Columbia Maybe
Brown Maybe

UPenn is a much tougher school to get into than UChicago. I can think of dozens of people who got flat out rejected by Penn but easily got into Chicago. Your resume really doesn’t show any uniqueness, which I pointed out in your other thread. It’s too typical of a rounded applicant that makes officials fall asleep. You better have strong essays or it’s going to be very doutful for Penn.

I think that if you raise your SAT’s, you’d have a really great shot at University of Chicago. Right now it’s possible, but you’d have to really wow them in your essay. I’d with that you’re a match for NYU, Boston College, and UMich. Brown, Columbia, and Penn are mid reaches.

Good luck!

Thanks for the chances!

I think some students from UChicago said a huge importance to the application is the essay. If you get your SAT scores up and write a really good essay, it is likely. The students there insist that it’s the qualities, the uniqueness, how interesting, open-minded and varied someone is too…
It’s my top choice too… good luck

Chicago, Columbia, Upenn, Brown-mid reach
BC- 50/50 with current scores
rest are match

Just wondering but what would my chances look like for McGill?

bummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmp

Buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuummmmmmmmmmmmmmmp again

U got no chance with those scores, anything below a 32 or 2150 and ur done despite everything else.
