Chance me for UNC, NC State, VA Tech, Appalachian...

I am a junior and live in NC.
I have been home schooled my entire life.

ECs:
I have a working student under the UNC-Chapel Hill Equestrian team coach/PE Teacher for the past 5 years.

I have had 2 jobs since I was 15.

I was on my Church's youth Council for 4 years, VP for 1 year.

I've been teaching beginner riding at a summer camp for the past 3 years.

I will be volunteering with a (large-animal) vet this summer.

I've bought, cared for and trained my horse (ex-racehorse) from the ground up with no financial help from my parents. I am very committed to her and that is where the majority of my time is spent out side of school.

I am taking classes at a local community college and I've gotten all A's (Biology, Chemistry, intro Sociology, intro Business).

My SAT scores are not great (1790, CR:670, M:520 WR:590 E:8) but I am getting tutoring and feel like I'm improving and will be taking the SAT again in May. My biggest difficulty is math, I am fine with solving equations but taking the word problems and making them equations is difficult for me, I always want to make it more complicated then needed. I LOVE Critical reading and my writing is so so.

I also will be taking the ACT soon and I think I will do better on it than the SAT. I also will be taking SAT IIs - Lit, Bio, Math I, and Spanish.

My GPA is currently about a 3.7 unweighted but I am trying to bring it up before the end of the year.

The schools I'm looking at are UNC-CH, NC State, VA Tech, Appalachian State, UNC-Greensboro, and St. Andrews Presbyterian College.

Thanks to anyone willing to chance me or give me any advice!

Your math is pretty weak (No calculus???), only 2 years of language, your only taking 6 classes next year…

Your GPA and EC’s are solid, but the “rigor” of your courses is pretty weak. Just bring up your SAT scores to 600+ in each section and you should be alright if you stay in state.

If you really want to go with equine science, SAPC has a respected program. But, UNC is always so competitive. Really, State is a better choice due to its expansive programs in animal science. Have you considered Clemson? CU has strong liberal arts and science programs and is nationally recognized. For you, I think State and SAPC are the best choices, Clemson and VT backups.

I forgot Physics also for Senior year, also there will be 3 years of Spanish. I did not realize that AP classes were available to Home-schoolers til I saw it on this site.

Should I take all of my senior classes (that are not at the CC) AP? Should I try and take Pre-Calculus in my Fall Semester and Calculus in my Spring semester? Or even Pre-Cal over the summer, Calculus in the Fall, and Trig in the spring?

I am very open to suggestions

Aren’t the CC classes equivalent in difficulty as AP classes?

It depends on how the college weights them.

^^Corey, that would be an excellent idea.

So Math is the obvious issue, especially at NC State and Va Tech. In your situation, I would try as hard as possible to get that math score up by 100 points, otherwise, you compare well to the VaTech and NC State statistics. I’m not sure how much weight they give to OOS and hardest courses available, but you do fall in their ranges on SAT and GPA.

You’ll probably get into App State. You Math SAT is slightly below their 25th percentile, but by just 10 points. Other than that, you match well.

UNC is notoriously an easy admission in-state, but you are very low in comparison on Math SAT (25th percentile is 620) and you’re at the bottom of their other ranges. You’ll need to improve your Math SAT by 100 points and the other two sections by about 50 points combined to be competitive.

So, to summarize your current situation:

App State - High Match
NC State - Reach
Va Tech - Reach
UNC-Ch - Not In

If you increase your Math SAT by 100 points (for motivation):

App State - In
NC State - Match
Va Tech - Match
UNC-Ch - Reach

Thank you! I am working very hard to get better at my math and hopefully I’ll reach my goals.

Anyone else have anything to offer?
