Chance me for University of Delaware

Hello,
For anyone who knows about admissions, I would love to share my stats. I am currently a high school Junior. Unfortunately, my GPA is quite low because I struggled very much Freshman year.

GPA (weighted): 3.628 (out of 5)
(Unweighted is 3.15)
PSAT scores: 1130, 570 RW, 560 Math

Desired major: Global Studies and International Business

Location: Massachusetts

Course Choices for Grade 11

Pre-calculus (A level)
Orchestra (Honors Select)
English 11 (Honors)
Chemistry (A level)
US History (AP)
Student Innovation Team
Economics (Honors)

Extracurriculars

Orchestra: I am in the honors orchestra at my school, and I have been a part of it since 5th grade.

Tri-M (Music National Honor Society): Started this year, provides numerous volunteer opportunities.

Model United Nations: (Vice President)- I have increased the club’s enrollment by 200% and have been in charge of registering the team for conferences.

Chess Club: I am a regular memebr and am running for president in a year or two.

Golf Team: I have been on the team every year so far and will continue to be on the team

You might be competitive, but acceptance is certainly not a shoo-in. While UD’s acceptance rate is highish, the typical admitted student has a 3.7 GPA and an average combined SAT score of over 1200.

Why do I say you might be competitive? UD is a large university that might find your OOS status attractive because your family will pay more. Also, you have some nice ECs (which are less important for public flagship admissions), and large universities do have to ultimately “put butts in seats.”

It would be a tough admit, and more specific information is important (how bad were those grades freshman year? what will be your actual SAT score when you take it?), but I certainly wouldn’t say, “Don’t apply to UD” or “Nope, no chance.” UD is a fine school, but its’ not Michigan in terms of admissions competitiveness. Have backups, though!

@Hapworth you wanted those full stats…

Class Choices Grade 9:

Algebra Geometry (A level): Semester one: 72, Semester two: 74 (my math teacher in 9th grade did not interact with the students, to this made it very hard to ask questions or make connections. Also, much of our learning is based on an iPad, so it is very easy to get distracted with the screen-based learning.
English 9 (A level): Semester one: 94, Semester two: 91
Intro Physics (A level): Semester one: 81, Semester two: 88 (first semester was tough because a teacher left the school mid-year and the department was scrambling to find a new teacher)
Latin II (A level, although honors and A level were combined in the same class): Semester one: 84, Semester two: 86 (while I am aware my Latin grades are not awful in grade 9, I loved the teacher. Unfortunately, I did not get the same teacher in 10th grade, and this has made me slightly less motivated. Plus, I have always struggled in Latin, and have been counting the days until I can drop it.)
World Civilizations (A level) Semester one: 85, Semester two: 90

Class Choices Grade 10

Advanced Math I (A level): Semester one: 85, Semester two: 81
Biology (A level): Semester one: 88, Semester two: 85
English 10 (Honors): Semester one: 84, Semester two: 81
Latin III (A level): Semester one: 79, Semester two: 73
US History I (Honors): Semester one: 88, Semester two: 88

Three boys from my son’s high school applied to U Delaware last year. (my son included and admitted) 2 were admitted and 1 was not. My son ultimately chose another school. One boy is attending.

Honestly, I felt being out of state helped. UD is very expensive and they love that out of state $$. I felt bad the third boy did not get in. He would have attended and I think had my son not applied, his chances would have been better.(I don’t think they’d take all three from the same high school) I think you have a very good chance. Although it is a larger university (compared to a college), you should still demonstrate interest. Have you visited yet? Be sure to do so if you haven’t. The boy who didn’t get in had a lower class rank than my son and his EC were heavy in sports while my son’s were more varied with a lot of community service and work experience.

I think you will get in. You may get deferred to regular decision but I think you’ll make it. The boy who did go from our high school really wanted it. He got an SAT tutor and raised his points significantly. I know on the ACT he went from a 21 to a 30. Might be an idea for you to consider.

Yah, I’ve had two visits there and will be going back for a third next year.
