My school has a foreign language specialty program that requires its members to take several different languages/AP history courses. I chose to take French 1 because I knew it would be much less stressful than AP Spanish Literature, and because my sister just started it this year (languages aren’t exactly her strong point so I’m helping her out.) Stress level has been a factor in how I balanced my schedule, but I have challenged myself over the years. Every year I have had at least one difficult class.

ACTIVITIES:
Co-editor-in-chief of online school newspaper for 2 years (currently in my 2nd year)
Intern at my county’s Board of Elections
Lifeguard/Pool Operator (got my lifeguard cert my freshman year, have worked the past 3 summers; just got my pool operator’s cert this summer because you have to be 17 years & have worked a certain number of hours in my county to be eligible for it)
played in the pep band for all 4 years including this year
Spanish, National, Latin, and Science honor societies
president of a club promoting education last year (not this year)
president of the greek & latin club (this year)
founder & president of The Hunger Games fan club (freshman year, it died a natural death and I did not continue it past freshman year)
over 250 community service hours
member of a couple community service clubs (may or may not include that on my apps)
VP of the peer counseling club (this year, v. low time commitment)

RECS:
guidance counselor (he knows me well- I have made a point of going to visit him regularly)
my boss from lifeguarding (she has been my boss the past 3 summers and knows me really well)
the person I am interning for at the Board of Elections (he doesn’t know me as well, but I have worked with him the past couple years, and I have volunteered at the Board since 6th grade during elections)
math teacher who has had me the past 3 years for at least 1 semester each year and has seen me fight for understanding of and a good grade in math classes (still visit him for math help sometimes)
English teacher I had 2nd semester freshman year and 1st semester sophomore year who has seen me perform well. (still go by and talk to her frequently)

I am planning on applying to UPenn just to see what happens. On the other hand, William & Mary and Smith College are my top two choices- have fallen completely in love with both schools. I’m not applying ED to any school because I don’t want to be locked in if I don’t receive sufficient financial aid. I am not sure what I want to major in but definitely not anything in STEM. What do you think??? Any advice would be helpful! Please don’t hold back!!

also, could you chance me for UVA? thanks!!

Interesting curriculum. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a student take 4 different languages in high school. D was admitted to both Smith and William & Mary last year. Do you live in Virginia - your chances for W&M and UVA will be different for in-state and out of state. You are an interesting case - extremely strong reading / writing, relatively weak in math/sciences. Penn is not impossible but it’s very much a reach. Your SAT is about 50 - 100 points lower than ideal. You have very good chances at both Smith and W&M, i believe UVA is a bit more competitive. It is a reach but maybe Wellesley should be considered
