i copied and pasted this from somewhere else so the format is a bit different but it should have all of the info. if theres anything missing please let me know
white/hispanic girl from texas, in 100k-150k income bracket. mom has bachelors degree (different university), dad has no college degree
SAT: 1380 (700 math, 680 w/r)
GPA 3.85 UW 4.01 W may go up a tad
class rank 21/79 (in january it will update, i know theres currently 75 seniors)
intended major: theater (acting path)
fin aid: needed but they didnt ask on app
coursework: attend an early college high school. my school makes us take dual enrollment classes starting freshman year. we dont choose any classes until senior year. will graduate with about 60 college credits. took intro to theater in freshman year (dual), will take theater practicum next semester (dual). took algebra I in 8th grade, finished with college alg in 11th (dual)
honors: nhs, nhrp
ecs: lacking, partly bc my school is new and doesnt have a lot of clubs. on common app i put: ambassador in girl scouts (silver award), who wants to be a millionaire backup contestant (didnt compete), youtube channel (500+ subs, 250k+ views), quite a bit of community service, member of local dance dance revolution group, made a club at my school, and rubik’s cubes
essays: should be pretty good. i made the why us essay pretty specific to uwm. for personal statement i basically told of my history of theater/performing (nothing wowing but theres a bit. i said stuff like 2 talent shows, a play, and some speech assignments)
lor: should be pretty good? my avid teacher knows a lot about us so i think hers will be good. my english teacher doesnt know a whole lot about me but i sent him a sheet with info, my history teacher should be pretty good. uwm has 1 required and 1 optional so i put history and avid, but i might switch history and english
You are just a tad below the 50th percentile in terms of gpa and sat scores. I’m not sure how dual enrollment is viewed there–AP tends to be favored in the Midwest.
But you are Hispanic (I hope you put that down) and from Texas so you are bringing (badly needed) diversity to the campus. I have no idea how hard theater is to get into, but I think you have a fair chance at UW in general. Your application will be competitive. Good luck!
I see you getting in but it’s a match, not a safety- but that’s the school - not sure how the theatre part plays - i.e. if you need to pass an audition, etc.
awesome, thank you! i havent submitted the app yet (making sure the lor gets put in), but yea i have hispanic down. looking at the common data set, it does look pretty overwhelmingly white non-hispanic lol (about 68% for undergraduates). i also asked on reddit, and the person didnt know about the theater difficulty either. hoping its not too hard. thank you!
thank you too! honestly im just happy its not a reach lol. theres no portfolio or audition for theater, so im hoping my essay explaining my experiences goes far
UW-Madison or just Madison. UWM is considered UW-Milwaukee fyi.
Your demographics will help. But still competitive.
You will need to find scholarships to help make this affordable. Sadly, I think Madison could be out of your reach financially as an out of state student needing aid.
You are correct on aid for most any OOS school that doesn’t offer significant merit….ie Bama, Miami Ohio, Arizona and many more although perhaps as a Hispanic student there’s an opportunity.
(I know she meant Madison. I was correcting her use of “UWM” in text or general conversation when talking about WI colleges. Badgers would never say they went to “UWM”).
