UW has the Purple & Gold scholarship for OOS that can knock off up to 32k off COA.
In addition, I have seen some parents pay for 1st year of medical school and the student covers the rest. Most MD’s will be able to pay off their grad debt in 5-10 years or less. This is one profession that i am not too worried about with grad debt. Now law school is another issue.
@ucbalumnus I believe so, yes. They encouraged me to apply to USC and Northwestern (which I’m considering not applying to right now) which are $70,000+ I think.
I feel guilty letting them pay for my college and medical school but they don’t want to me work and risk poor grades or pay off loans just as soon as I start making money for myself. I intend to pay back the money they lovingly gave me once I am able to. I’m the only child so they made it a point to save money for my studies no matter what I planned to do with my future. And of course, I had to love one of the most expensive career paths.
@UCBUSCalum and @BayAreaMom15 The reason I’m not applying to UCB is because I don’t want to kill my pre med grades with that curve. I’ve seen it all over CC that UCB has a lot of “weedy” classes which intend to make you forget about wanting to go to med school. I’ve visited the campus many times as I have been to stem cell research conferences which doubled as tours, and I didn’t really feel like I would want to attend classes or live on the campus. I’m already applying to UCLA and UCSD which I consider reaches. UCLA is more of just a “lucky shot” because I’m pretty confident I won’t get in. My dream school is definitely UCSD because of the location.
I’ve been in the quarter system in middle school and I didn’t feel too rushed. I did have semesters in high school and I didn’t really like them. My friends in quarter system high schools seemed to have a lot more time to do other things because projects that were “long term” were really only due in a week or two. I feel like a quarter system would kick the procrastinating nature right out of me.
@socaldad2002 I guess I’ll apply for that scholarship. I’m not opposed to applying for scholarships but I just feel like they should go to people that honestly cannot afford tuition without financial aid of some sort. As I mentioned before, the NPC on some schools gave me no financial aid.
I’ve sat down and tried to talk my parents out of paying for me but they keep insisting that it’s “their job to take care of me” and that I shouldn’t worry about money and just get good grades in college. I have no idea how much money my parents have. Even yesterday while filling out the UC application for my parent’s salary and assets, my dad took my laptop and filled it out himself. He didn’t want me to see all of his financial information. I wish I can talk my parents out of paying for me, but if I can’t, I will pay back every penny once I am a practicing physician.
@BayAreaMom15 if you don’t mind me asking, was there any other reason your son was waitlisted to the mid tier UCs? From minimal information, the only thing I see that could’ve waitlisted him was his choice of major. Besides that, his GPA and SAT would make him a very competitive applicant. Now, I know it’s not all stats based, but GPA is king for the UCs. Sorry, I don’t mean to intrude.
@Aneem00 I understand the weeding out. I know of a girl who graduated from UCB around 2010. She was a National Merit winner and had a 3.6 GPA at UCB. She still got into UCD’s medical school. 3.6 is a little low to get into UCD medical, but I think many of the CA medical schools understand UCB’s reputation. She is doing her residency at UCLA. On the other hand, I know of a guy who went to UCD and another female who also went to UCD, both around 2010. They both had 4.0 at UCD. The guy went to a medical school most people never heard of in Virginia. The female took 3 tries before getting into USC medical school. Everything also is dependent on the MCAT score. Good luck in your application.

Accoording to the UW website “U.S. students admitted as freshmen are automatically considered for the Purple & Gold four-year scholarship”
You don’t have to do anything, you either get it or you don’t. Plus don’t feel sorry, it’s a merit scholarship for OOS and they are already paying 3x the tuition of in-state students. Take whatever they give you as you will still be paying 165K for 4 years!
Yeah, compare to other State Flagships, UW is incredibly generous in giving OOS student merit scholarships. The Purple and Gold used to be $5000 per year, but increased to up to $10,000 per year in the last admission cycle. In contrast, Cal Ploy SLO gives a maximum of $1000 per year OOS scholarship, and UCs give none.
