Chance me for VA State Schools! (UVA, W&M, VT)

Hello forum,

I am a white male junior from VA at school in DC.

My cumulative GPA is a 3.72 and rising (has shown consistent improvement, especially during my junior year). My last quarter's GPA was a 4.083 on a weighted 4.0 scale (0.5 for honors, 1.0 for AP).

My SAT is 2220 (710R, 760M, 750W).

I took 3 honors freshman year, 4 honors sophomore year, 2 AP and 1 honors junior year (AP Calc AB, AP Spanish), and will take 4 APs senior year (AP Calc BC, AP Physics, AP Econ [Macro and Micro], AP Stats).

I am involved in a boatload of community service (homeless shelters, soup kitchens, maintenance projects, river clean-ups), and I also volunteer at hospitals to spend time with youth cancer patients.

I am a member of the National Spanish Honor Society (note: NOT the NHS) and I tutor other Spanish language students on homework and essay-writing.

I have a plethora of leadership activities (different camps/retreats) and I am the president of a medical supply collection club at my school.

I am a water polo goalkeeper, and I will make varsity next season.

My poetry has been published in my school's selective Annual Literary Publication.

I work part-time on the weekends at a restaurant.

My question to you all: What chances do I have as an in-state student to get into:

University of Virginia

William & Mary

Virginia Tech

If it helps at all for your consideration of W&M, I interview extremely well.

bump this post

UVA: Match
W&M: Match
VA Tech: Low match

You have a very similar profile to me…Similar GPA, EXC’s, schedule, in state. Higher test scores though. I just got into W&M (w interview) and was rejected at UVA.

UVA: high match
W&M: match
VT: safety

Just a word…it has been my experience at my school that only the very, very top white males get into UVA. I had 4 black students with (in my biased opinion) worse credentials than me get in. At the same time, girls at my school seem to have trouble getting into W&M wheras guys don’t have as much trouble. Because of the trends at my school, I think W&M is a better bet. Go Tribe!

Hope this helps and best of luck!

Catria - thank you

Nathancbritt - I’m torn between W&M and UVA. I guess we’ll find out where I go when acceptance letters come rolling in next year. That’s what I thought for VT, just making sure of it. As with your school, it appears W&M is the better bet for me, but it could really go either way. I realize as a racial majority I don’t have quite the boost I would if I were a minority, but I think being a male could help because both W&M and UVA have about 10% more females than males - not sure if they’re trying to balance it out, but if they are, then that may not hurt me.

I am in a very similar boat, I have a 3.78 gpa (trending heavily upward), high SATs, and a plethora of business oriented EC’s and leaderships. My sister went to UVA and I know it’s my dream school however talking to the deans and my counselor it will take a small miracle for someone with below a 3.9 to get in.
