I am looking to apply to some Virginia universities, mainly:

Virginia Tech Engineering (ED)
UVA
UofR

I am from the Richmond area and go to a public school, here are some basic stats:

GPA - 3.951 W (Pretty sure this is weighted, school doesn't give UW)
SAT - 760 Math, 650 Reading (and 620 Writing) [1410/1600, 2030/2400]
Class Rank - 90/399 (This might change because the class size has not been updated for the upcoming year, my class is somewhat competitive, but I'm applying Early Decision)

I've taken 2 years of French, and 3 years of Spanish.
I've taken a huge amount of honors classes to challenge myself (usually the most I can) except math Junior year.
I've taken a Technical Drawing class (AutoCAD class), an honors architecture class (We used Revit, an Autodesk program), an honor engineering class (We used Inventor, another Autodesk program), and I am taking an Independent Study Engineering class (Basically for seniors, I can choose to use any programs and do independent projecets).

Senior Schedule:
Independent Study Engineering
Honors Regional History
Calculus I
AP Government
AP Biology
Honors English
Honors Advanced Shakespeare

AP Classes:
AP U.S. History - 3
AP Government - Senior Year
AP Biology - Senior Year

I have taken advanced science and math classes, Honors Physics, etc. I also expect to have a very good recommendation (I'd say this might be a hook), and I am a white male.

I don’t know too much about these schools, but you have a solid resume here. I’m guessing you’re going into the engineering field with all the science and math? If so, it seems like you have a solid background in the subject, and some ECs that involve it that would help you on your resume. The only real flaw I see is your SAT score, which is still not that bad, but again, I don’t know much about these schools and the average student profile. Assuming they’re aren’t incredibly selective, and if you ED to VT, I’d say you’re at least a match for all of them.

Also, the strong rec isn’t exactly a hook. It’s a good thing to have, but a hook is more like being a URM or something.

you have a great shot at vt engineering. uva will be easier because you are in state, but still kind of a low reach, i think. ur should be a match. i would find some other schools you are interested in just in case you get deferred ed from vt (probably won’t happen, but it’s best to be prepared), maybe jmu or some other schools just to round out your list. good luck!

well i guess VT is your first choice thats why you are EDing there but im pretty sure who would get in RD. You should be fine for richmond as well and UVA would be a low reach.

Well, you’re missing out on the opportunity. I’m attending that program, and I can say that it is more competitive to get into than any of the schools you have on your list.

I doubt I’m missing anything, I’m completely uninterested in VCU, and completely uninterested in anything medical.

Okay, that’s fine, if you have such an apparently strong opinion about VCU. Anyway, you wouldn’t have gotten in lol. And UVA is out given your gpa, unless you wow them somehow.

Uh huh, indeed. I don’t need to share my stats with you to tell you what kind of student I am. VCU definitely has opportunities, but if you’re too smug to even try, the joke’s on you.

Not really. I don’t know if you understood me or not, but not everyone wants to go to your school. I’ve grown up next to VCU, and I don’t like it. On top of that (which might not even be a good reason to not go to a school in the first place) I am not interested in going into medical school. Why would I want to go to medical school at a school I hate? I want to pursue something in Engineering possibly or Business even. It doesn’t make me smug, if I was interested in going to a medical school then I would consider it. I know that VCU has a good program and probably does have opportunities, but that doesn’t mean I want to go there. I’m not sure if you understand the word smug either, at first I should apply to your school because its so much better and harder to get into than the ones I’m interested in? Then I don’t want to go, so you think I just couldn’t have gotten in anyways, I’m too stupid, or my GPA is too low huh… What was the point in telling me about it in the first place?

Solid chances on everything other than UVA. Your SATs and GPA are within range. Your’re course load is strong. UVA is a reach for you. Chance me back?
