Chance Me for Wharton, University of Austin(McCombs), MIT(Sloan), and Northwestern

I’m currently a freshman at a pretty competitive public school, and I hope to double major in Business Administration and Mangement, Operations along with Applied Mathematics. I am making this discussion to list my future achievements and see if they are worth accomplishing in hopes to reach my dream business schools. I believe I am pretty competitive but I want your guys’ opinions on how I can improve. I’ll try to be as modest as possible, knowing myself and what I’m capable of. I also plan to apply ED to most, if not all of these schools.

Race: Indian Male from Texas with 200k+ income

I wanted to really be weighted on a more business aspect to show the colleges my dedication towards the subject and passion towards the general topic. The courses may change as time goes by seeing as it’s only planned so far. I want to be modest on my AP Exam scores and SAT II’s, and in my future extracurriculars so I don’t seem too precocious.

Scores:

Predicted SAT Score: ~1580

Predicted SAT Math II: 800

Plan to get all 5’s on AP Exams(Probably will get a 4 here and there, but for the most part, it should be solid)

Extracurriculars(All of the ones listed are what I plan to do all four years of high school):

Hopefully, qualify for All-State TMEA (10-12), I play clarinet

I want to become a drum major by sophomore year and continue for rest of high-school because I love band and I want to give back to it. I feel like I am a pretty strong leader and I am dedicated to anything I enjoy.

FBLA(Sophomore President, Junior President, Senior President, respectively of the grade I am in), currently a “Freshman Ambassador”, plan to implement a part of the club to go out to financially deficient places/homeless areas and provide advice on how to financially restructure their lives. I want to lead this for the rest of high-school.

Mu Alpha Theta, I plan to become at least vice president by 10th grade and continue as president for 11th and 12th grade. Hopefully, qualify for AIME for all of high-school and make USAMO 10-12. Compete in many, MANY math competitions including college level.

Part of Science Olympiad, not seriously dedicated but I do mostly math events and I am decent at them.

Plan to intern at local business firms

I hope to rack up at least 400(definitely more depending on their value) volunteer hours, although I’m not sure how much value that adds.

I’m not sure how good my essays or my recommendations will be, but I think by that time, they should be decent(like hopefully above average). I’ll definitely figure out more EC’s but for now, these EC’s are rock solid for me.

Thank you guys so much for taking the time to look at my “resume” and I appreciate any feedback you have to offer. Thanks a lot!

Your plan is pretty solid. You want to take another subject test besides Math 2. You want to get those major leadership position roles in clubs. I also suggest trying to start a business. Entrepreneurship shows dedication and passion to learning business fundamentals and I think it is a big part of an application to schools like these that you want to apply to. Having a successful business will help even more. It doesn’t have to be something super technical. It can be something as simple as a private tutoring business with a solid website and a decent client base. The volunteer hours do not matter much. If you like volunteering, go for it but racking up hours for sake of the application will not improve your application by a lot. I’d also look into business/entrepreneurship competitions for high school students such as those held by DECA, which, if your school does not have a chapter, you should start a chapter, and the Diamond Challenge. Look for opportunities to win awards and gain recognition relating to achievements in business

Thanks a lot for the feedback! My next question is because of band, which is a time-consuming activity, how will I be able to compete in DECA which, and I have already checked, will definitely conflict. I definitely hold both business and band to an incredibly high priority, but when that conflict arises what should I do?

You gotta choose. If you like band more than DECA, stick with it. If you think you’ll get more recognition/awards/accomplishments in band, stick with it. But if the DECA chapter in your school, if there is one, is big and competing in many events, I would recommend at least trying it out because it is a very relevant extracurricular to have for your application

Ok, I see. Thank you so much for your input. One last question-Are my ECs solid and is there anything more I should add?

Being DECA president didn’t really help my admissions odds in retrospect. My best advice would just be to involve yourself in extracuriculars that you actually enjoy. If that’s DECA, great, if that’s band, that’s also great. Just make sure you enjoy what you do and don’t do it just to impress colleges. They really just don’t care that much

^ that’s true only to a certain degree. Spending 500 hours in band without winning awards/recognition versus becoming president of DECA and winning some competitions is probably better in my opinion

If you have FBLA president, Mu Alpha Theta President, DECA president with awards, and perhaps a business that you founded, I think those demonstrate your passion for business

In my school’s case, doing DECA often hurts an application because it’s such a common club and doesn’t make you stand out. I would stick with band but make sure you get a leadership position or some reacognition
