Chance me for William and Mary?

I'm a high school junior and I'm really considering applying to W&M next year. It's been my dream school since I was young, and coincidentally it has my projected major and other aspects of college that I'm looking for.

I'm a white female from NJ, probably not applying for much financial aid.

I want to major in Gender, Sexuality, and Women's Studies. I've been very passionate about equal rights for years and I think that will come across in my application, especially my essay.

Unweighted GPA of 3.86, weighted is about 4.7.

Ranked 45th out of about 750 (top 6% or 7%)

ACT composite score of 31. Superscored is a 32, I'm not sure if W&M superscores though.

Freshman Year courses:
English I Honors A
Algebra I Honors B+
World History A
Integrated Science A
Spanish I A+
Personal Finance/Civics A+
Speech and Drama I A+
Gym/Health A+

Sophomore Year courses:
English II Honors A
Geometry Honors B
US History I Honors A
Biology Honors A
Spanish II A+
Social Groups and Law A+
TV Production I A
Gym/Health A+

Junior Year courses:
English III A
Algebra II Honors A-
US History II Honors A+
Chemistry Honors A+
Spanish III A
TV Production II A
Sociology A+
Gym/Health A+

Senior year I'm planning to take: AP Literature, AP European History, AP Art History, Physics Honors, Pre-Calc Honors, Concious of Man (academically-based elective that counts as a history course); and hopefully I'll get into my school's Peer Leadership program, but if not then I'm planning to take Psychology.

ECs: President of the Gay-Straight Alliance at my school (basically "re-founded" it and built it back up from the ground), volunteer at my local Pride Center, Rotary Interact (lots of community service hours with them for many different things), Club Hope (it's a club that my friend started for uplift, support, and advice. I'm very active with this), Class Council, History NHS, Science NHS, English NHS, guitar lessons outside of school since middle school, community service at various places (pride center, hospital, old age home, etc) and with various clubs listed above. I babysit neighborhood kids, take care of my baby cousin quiet often and for a generous amount of time, tutor my younger sister occasionally, write poetry in my spare time and run my own poetry blog, go on yearly trips all over the US, and some other things I can't think of right now.

Honors: Nothing huge, but I've made the academics high honor/honor roll every marking period since freshman year. I'm also in the 3 NHSs listed above.

I should get very good recommendations from certain teachers that I've established a more personal teacher-student relationship with (my History/Sociology teacher, the teacher that's the adviser of the Gay-Straight Alliance, my Algebra teacher, guitar teacher, etc)

My essay should also be pretty damn good. I feel extremely confident with my writing and that's definitely my strongest point academically.

So how am I doing? What do you think?

Looks very solid.
William and Mary is a great school. It’s harder for out of state versus in-state to get in.
Good luck.

I think you’re in pretty darn good shape. Some things I would look for: are there any opportunities to move up or challenge yourself in the courses you mentioned? You seem to be very strong in Spanish, for example, are there opportunities to move up to an Honors Spanish course for next year? If so, take advantage of those opportunities. W&M currently does not superscore the ACT, only the SAT. William and Mary is a great school, but make sure you can afford the full OOS cost without FA if attending. You may also want to apply ED if it is your top school, other factors notwithstanding. Good luck!

Overall you sound like a great student. The only downside I see is that you’ll have three AP’s and none are in science or math. I’ve read several places where W&M likes to see that you’ve taken APCalculus and AP Physics.

Unfortunately, I read on the W&M website that they super score the SAT, but not the ACT. However, a 31 is a good score.

Good luck!

@vamominvabeach‌ I’ve heard they like to see Calculus and Physics too, and of course AP if possible. This is where my school system screws me… I can’t possibly take Calculus in high school because of something that happened in middle school. I was supposed to be placed in the highest math course possible but wasn’t, and they wouldn’t move me up even after my mom talked to the guidance counselor. Because of this I simply can’t get up to Calculus during high school because Algebra 1 & 2, Geometry, and Pre-calc must be taken beforehand. Also with Physics, regular or honors physics is a prerequisite for AP Physics at my school, so again I simply can’t get up to AP Physics. I thought about taking AP Chem next year, but all our AP science classes are double periods, which means then I wouldn’t be able to take any kind of Physics at all, which I do want to take.

I think the physics course is more important than the AP Chem course in this case, which you can always take in your first year of college. A summer course or a community college course, could be of consideration, but again it is something you couldn’t control before you got into high school, so I don’t think that would be held against you. Like I mentioned in another thread “like to see” doesn’t mean that you are doomed if you did not take those courses. It is simply recommended. If you show strength in your extracurriculars, your essays, and make the most of what you have, you’ll still be a competitive applicant.

Hello! This is really late but did you apply ED?
