Hey guys...I'd really like to know if I even have a chance, I know it's a bit early, I am about to start junior year, but here we go anyway:

I'd like to major in Anthropology, Sociology, international relations or something of that nature at W&M
4.47 weighted GPA
28 ACT score
1660 PSAT score
APs: 3-US History 3-World History 5-Human Geography
I'm just about to start the IB diploma programme at my high school.
All honors/AP classes, except chemistry last year, which I recieved a B in.
I usually get As, except for math and science.
Just about fluent in French
Extra curriculars: so far, 6yrs of trumpet private lessons, marching band, Nat'l French Honor Society, I've volunteered at the local library for 5 years, and I'm pretty active in my high school's Young Democrats club.
I'm an out of state white female, don't know if that makes any difference...

Thanks guys in advance, I'd just really like to know. I've wanted to go to W&M forever!

Also, does anyone know if W&M is particularly ‘good at’ the majors I mentioned? Which would you say is their strongest?

Remember a few things about WM and Mary;

1 - It is a very competitive admissions process that looks at “whole person” scoring. That is to say that they look at your UNWEIGHTED GPA…SAT/ACT scores…ECs and the like. They put this into a pkg and make a decision on whether or not you meet the standard they are looking for in a particular year.

2 - They BUILD a class. They look for diversity in their student body and look for people from across the US and from around the globe to put together a dynamic class with a a myriad of experiences to HELP the COLLEGE. Message is to seperate yourself from the norm.

3 - IS v OOS…M v F are important factors. College is 55% F and most of school is IS. Therefore is you are OOS F then your odds become lower.

Admissions will tell you that they do not accept everyone that qualifies and they admit that they miss some great candidates…DO NOT B Discouraged. You will end up where you were meant to be regardless. To that end…my S wanted Georgetown in the worst way but I thought WM was a better fit for him. He heard from WM on a monday and was supposed to hear from GU on thursday. Wednesday nite he told me that he hoped GU rejected him because he felt like he should go to WM. I do not know why he had a change of heart but I was thrilled.

I can speak to IR program and tell you it is a first class program. WM is a LA college which is the best starting point for MOST undergrads.

Look at your numbers compared to “incoming student profiles” at different schools and you can guage where you sit. You already know that your AP scores are low in 2 areas, as WM takes 4 and up…I believe they only take a 5 in US History…and you can look at ACT and SAT scores as well. Most colleges do not use PSAT in their assessment.

Lastly…visit…visit and visit some more. We looked at 13 schools and we found we crossed 1/2 of them off the list simply based on the visit. Do the tour and presentation sessions…they normally are very good…I will say that WM was very open and frank in their discussion.

Good luck

Just one small addendum. We look at whatever GPA a school provides to us. We put that GPA in context (meaning we see if it’s weighted or unweighted – and we have no problem with either – we also look at course rigor, the profile of the high school, class rank if provided, etc). We don’t unweight GPAs or recalculate them primarily because we care more about the grades and rigor behind the GPA than the GPA itself.

Also, AP scores are not a required part of the application.
