i think if you were to apply ed to duke youd stand a chance, maybe also look at cornell and darthmouth…i feel like you could even be overqualified for a school like bc so maybe use that as a safety, but i think you improve your chances if you apply to a school you really like early decision, something im not doing because i cant decide on a specific school

Colleges will know where you rank, are top of class? What percentage of your school goes to ivies? Have you excelled in any EC? Are you good enough in any sport to be recruited?

What’s more, why do Economics? This seems to be a competitive major and you must have a reason to do it, when hundreds of your fellow class-mates will take Econs too. How do you bring worth to your school while doing a major others are doing well in? Any distinguishing factors that separate you from the others?

(I know I don’t have any great stuff that makes me any special…)

Thats what I was thinking but when I visited some of these schools they told me that applying ED doesn’t really increase your chances.

“Colleges will know where you rank, are top of class? What percentage of your school goes to ivies? Have you excelled in any EC? Are you good enough in any sport to be recruited?”

There are usually 3 or 4 people a year from the senior class of about 160-170 who go to ivies. I’m not good enough to be recruited for lacrosse to the schools I want to go to and I am probably 3rd, 4th, or 5th in my class (just an estimate)

And the reason I’m thinking about economics is because it is such a broad topic that covers a lot of subjects like marketing, finance, etc. But I may just put myself as undecided because I’m really not 100% sure.

Just about every kid on CC calls their school competitive. A MA prep school were 3-4/160 goes to an ivy is not seen as competitive by top schools. By contrast, top prep schools send 30% plus to ivies. Good but not highly competitive ones 10% plus. So ivies will look for you to have a top rank.

If you are 3 or 4 with a 1510, Yale will be very tough. Brown will be too, but more in the realm of reasonable reach with maybe a 25% chance. Duke is more realistic with maybe a 40% chance. BC is the right level of selectivity, but being from MA makes it tough because they need kids from all over. Schools not in the NE at that level of selectivity are good targets for you.

the 740 in math is not low enough that you need to worry about retaking(even with yale, a 740 can get you in) I would take a math subject test though, as colleges do like it(though if math is not your forte, then it is not essential by any means)

I think you have as decent a chance as any at all those colleges(especially brown and bc)…just try to write a stellar essay…perhaps zone in special olympics? that is something that really stands out to me.

chance me?

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/964863-i-thought-i-had-chance-until-i-started-reading-these-chance-me-ill-chance-you.html

what about georgetown? and what would be some really good safeties to apply to?

im freaking out about college with senior year coming up. my parents want to me to only go ivy and don’t understand that there are other colleges out there :/

What school do you go to?

You’d probably get into Cornell and Duke. Some more leadership positions would help a lot with the bigger names. The big LACs (Amherst, Swat, Williams, Middlebury) are also good for Econ, and I think your GPA and SAT puts you in the running for them. CMU, JHU, and NYU are all decent for econ, and I’d say you have a very strong chance at those. (Plus if you like lax, JHU would be a fun place to go)

I had the same problem as you with parents, but we looked at Tufts and BC and they realized that Ivies aren’t the only nice schools. Then we visited Cornell and I decided to apply there ED, so time wasted changing their minds ha

please chance me back: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/962832-chance-me-please.html

With your class rigor and good class rank, you’ll get to at least Cornell on academic merit. But do visit other colleges to see where do you best ‘fit’ yourself in for the next four years in your life.

thats the problem, I want to visit schools like Tufts, BU, Trinity, etc, but my parents say they won’t pay for a school like that. For them its either a school from the top 20 of US World News Rankings or state school.

JHU is #14, Vanderbilt is #17, Rice is #17, CMU is #22… not that that list is 100% accurate, but those are all very good schools that you stand very good chances of getting into

i was planning on applying vandy and i will be sure to check out jhu and carnegie mellon.

any recommendations for safeties that would give me the best education i can get with my stats?

Ah yes, Vandy would be a good choice too. Its standards are comparable to a few Ivies.

A few safeties would include Syracuse, Rice and BC; not to forget some other state schools — but I think the nearest one would be the SUNY schools or Penn State, so why bother?

Anyone care to chance for UVa out of state as well?
and thanks for all the help so far guys
