So, can some of you please help chance me for a few schools (Johns Hopkins, Vassar, Emory, Tufts, Middlebury, and Princeton)?
My Scores are a 2200 (800 reading, 700 math, 700 writing) and my GPA is an unweighted 3.6 (I take honors Latin, but my school does not offer APs)
My extracurriculars: I am a National Gold Medalist for the Scholastic Arts & Writing Competition, a 4-time winner of the May Sarton Award (one of the most prestigious student fiction contests in the Bronx), a 3-time winner of the non-ficiton contest at my school, an editor on my school newspaper, created a new humor publication at my school, teach a journalism elective, and am a varsity fencer. Also, over the summer I am interning for a major media publication and may get some bylines for its website.
Legacies of Note: I am a double legacy at Vassar (mom and grandmother), a quadruple legacy at Middlebury (my dad and 3 of his siblings), and Princeton (both of my paternal grandparents’ families are huge donors–there is a playing field and auditorium named with their respective families’ name).
Ethnicity and Background: I come from a comfortable nuclear family–I go to private school–but my extended family is significantly more well-off. I am half Chinese and half WASP.
Thank you so much in advance!
JHU : reach
Vassar : high match/ reach
Emory : Match/high match
Tufts: Reach
Middlebury: high match
Princeton: Reach/Low reach because of the donors
do you have any safety schools lined up? or any other matches?
i suggest you look at schools such as GMU, or boston… those seem to be good matches for you
your GPA isnt too up to princeton level to be a high match or something
chance me please:

You have very interesting EC’s. Just FYI, our HS has had 3 students admitted to Tufts in the last two years. None of the 3 were in the top 10% of their class, and at least two had slightly lower GPA’s than does the OP. But all 3 had strong EC’s, 2200+ SAT’s, and demonstrated interest. I’m sure they all wrote very good essays and had strong LOR’s too. One applied ED, one was a legacy RD and one was a regular RD.
What about Bard or Sarah Lawrence for Writing? I’ve heard that Goucher is good, too, and it would probably be a low-match for you (near safe, I’d say). They would balance out your list. Do you want to get out of NYC?
I agree with babachicken’s assessment. However, I completely disagree that Princeton is a “low reach”. Your GPA is very low compared to other applicants, and I don’t think legacy status or your EC’s (which are excellent, by the way) will be able to make up for it. Grades are arguably the most important aspect of an application.
I recommend that you look at some smaller liberal arts colleges (Barnard, Williams, Swarthmore, Wesleyan, Haverford) that are still excellent schools.
Chance me back please?
Curious about some of these assessments. I’m guessing you’re taking the legacies into account when you describe the OPs chances at JHU, Tufts, and Vassar as worse than at Middlebury. I would have considered chances at all of those schools as similar, with Middlebury being perhaps a bit more difficult than the others.
I think you should try to improve your GPA. Your SAT is good for this school. I think Princeton is out of the picture for you because of the 3.6 GPA. Like others have said you should look at other great schools that accept a higher percentage of students. My friend got into Emory with a 3.5 so that is definitely a reach for you. Keep up the goof work and you will make it. Please chance me back :-*
I agree. All is good (and superb ECs btw), except for GPA really. UW should be around 3.8 (for JHU, at least).
I’d say that your SAT score is there, but I’d like 2250 to be safe.
So overall:
JHU: 60% you’re in
Vassar: 65% (more likely if you know officers and staff there)
Princeton: I’ll go as high as 70-80% due to the donations (colleges love money, in case you didn’t know yet XD)
The other schools, I’m not too familiar with their exact sores and what they look for, so I can’ t say much about those, sorry
If I can give you one piece of advice:
-Be sure to visit all the campuses
-Schedule and interview and write an essay about how each college is your DREAM and how much you love them (I’m sure you’ve heard this before, but I can’t stress the importance of it enough).
Hope I’ve helped!
