Chance me HTC?

Hi guys! Here are some factoids about me–I would love any advice or any opinions of my chances!

Basics: White, female, senior, OH resident but attending a good NH boarding school, ranked 1 or 2 in class, 3.75ish UW GPA, 2170 (2220 super scored, 1400-1450 combined M+R), applying for HTC Environmental Science and English programs

Academics: I’ve always taken the hardest classes I could and had a very full schedule, my only weak point is languages (2 years of French, 2 years Chinese, 0.5 year Hindi)

My senior year classes are: AP Art History, AP European History, AP Environmental Science, AP English Literature, AP AB Calculus, Global Economics (I am only allowed to take 6 full year classes)

Distinctions: Harvard Book Prize, History and English Department Awards, Creative Writing Awards, National K12 Ceramics Exhibition, Cum Laude, I was awarded a scholarship to study abroad in India for the second half of my junior year

Hooks? Other factors?: I have a really strong English/Creative writing portfolio and a strong art portfolio (ceramics and watercolor), I have a significant number of volunteer hours from community service at my school and in India, I spent a summer researching medical entomology as an intern with the University of Illinois, I have been a peer tutor for three years, a student leader for three years in a variety of roles, and I lead three of my own clubs as well as participating in a variety of others, I participated in STEM for two years and my team placed first in NH and 3rd nationally (I was also the only girl on the team)

I want to be accepted into the program soo badly! It sounds like a truly perfect fit for me, and it would work out really well for my family (for a variety of reasons) as well. I’m just worried that my GPA is low and I’m a bit of a BWRK (I’m a passionate, unique individual, but I’m worried that’ll get lost under all my extracurriculars etc.)

Sorry this was so long! I would truly appreciate any feedback at all. Thank you so much!!

When our D spoke with the coordinator of the HTC she was told that they typically get around 500 applicants. In the past they eliminate those who don’t meet the minimum criteria immediately. In the past they have had around 320 who met their qualifications. They usually accept around 80-100 to make up a class of about 70 or so. They have around 30 or so programs so they usually only accept a few into each program.

You definitely seem to meet the requirements so your application will be considered. I know you have some essays to write so I would do your best on them. Hopefully you’ll be one of the 50% of the qualified applicants that gets an opportunity to interview. Good luck.

I hope you got my PM about this. My advice is to be as enthusiastic s you can if you get to the interview stage (and even before… let them know this is your FIRST CHOICE (by far!).

Thank you Ivvcsf, and good luck to your daughter if she is applying this year!

Thank you digmedia! I did receive your PM (you must be so proud of your son’s accomplishments! Wow!). I will be sure to follow your advice on connecting my interests and making sure OU know’s that OU and the HTC is my first choice.

Just based on your stats and enthusiasm, I think your chances are good.

Alas she chose not to apply. She has been accepted to OU and it is her first choice. I personally think HTC is a wonderful option and felt it would be a great fit and opportunity, however, she feels she can achieve similar outcomes without having to worry about a thesis her senior year. She would like to graduate in three years if possible and having a senior thesis while applying to grad schools etc. seemed to make that less likely. Best wishes to you.
