Essay:

All my essays will try to avoid talking about my academic/extracurricular side, but rather something more human.
- ethical dillema (common app 2011-2012) how I was a school loner in grade 7-9. an essay with some humble self-deprecation, my transformation, who I am now (leader). bottom --> top
- Music for Better Society (how it means so much for me) playing piano to so many people +400 hours of performance - too many special moments
- Will somehow include in my essays that I will head my career in IR, Econ, Politics.

chance me! I will chance back. Karma will reward you!

You have got very good shot at JHU Georgetown and UC Berkley
How you write your essays matter at Chicago so can’t say anything about that

I say Cornell and Columbia are a mid reaches for you but Wharton would be extremely competitive
and of course HYPS are tough and high reaches for anybody

Don’t know about Julliard though

if you shine in your essays show your passion for debate and MUN get good recs and display your leadership and unique abilities don’t hesitate to share your stats at the decision threads after a year
GL!

good advice.

BUMP

Your successes in MUN speak for themselves. Keep it up and write about it in your essays, supplements, etc. Again, all of these colleges are tough to get in to.

I assume your good at piano too! :). Finally Oxford PPE??? The admission rate for that is lower than Harvard altogether. Be prepred for a tough interview. My mentor is a rhodes scholar and according to him undergraduate was not as good as it seems. Graduate school is much berthed. Chance me!!!

*better is what I meant

Im pretty sure you have a great chance at the schools you have interest in! Your ECs are spectacular, your grades and rigor of courses are exceptional, and your interests clear. Good luck in admissions!

thanks for advice.

BUMP

bump bump bump

I think you have a fair shot at most of these. Harvard and Yale (the best of the best [cr

Oh but (I didn’t see it at first) JUILLIARD, you have to be a REALLY good musician. Like there freshman class size is only in the 100’s (NOT 1000’s) of students. But If u think u got it, go get it! :)

For HYP, Columbia, Penn, Chicago

SAT I: Average (to compete with top Asians)

SAT II score: Okay

Course Load: Average

ECs: Piano and Debate (Speech) awards look good.

Hmmm… Asian Male International

HYP, Columbia, Penn, Chicago: Major Reach
Cornell, JHU, Georgetown: Reach
Berkeley: Better chance compare to other colleges

U Chicago:
Essays are very important. Start early and write something unique.
Show your passion for learning in “Why Chicago?” essay. (<- Very important)

Apply to more selective colleges including LACs.
Good luck to you.

bump bump bump

GPA is right about on the border of B+ and A if not counting Freshman year I think, right? That would make all of these schools pretty difficult, but the Ivies especially. It would still be low, but better, for the other schools.

Except for Oxford, because they, like other European schools, focus primarily on academics. They want basically 3.85 UW GPAs and above, and I’m pretty sure they even mention somewhere on their website the grades/scores you should have if you hope to gain admittance.

But because you had a moderately heavy course load, UChicago, JHU, Georgetown, and Berkeley would likely be reaches instead of high reaches (as they are for the vast majority of students in the country).

Good luck, and I wish you the best! :)

Oxford: (Minimum 1400 between CR and M or 32+ ACT(
and (3 subject tests 700+ or 3 5s on APs)

These are the only requirements. But they are VERY VERY VERY VERY number interested. There is ONLY a 47 line personal statement to explain your ECs and successes. Your numbers and your interview will make you or break you.

HYP- High Reach
Cornell, Chicago, Penn: Mid-High Reach
JHU, Georgetown: Mid Reach
Berkeley: High match

bump bump bump

at born2dance94: regarding your statements, since I live in Canada, the cut-off mark for an A is 86%. In many ways, it’s harder to achieve high marks in Canada than US due to this rubric difference.

Therefore, I am, according to my school, receiving a 4.1 GPA (weighted), and by my regular common app, will be receiving a 4.2, which is the highest in my grade if you can read. At our school, 4 = A 3 = B.

Thanks for your concern.

SAT = I will take it again in October. I am looking for a 2350+. I am taking the ACT in June. My practice tests are looking 34+.

Academic-wise, there is no worry for any school.

One thing I am concerned, which unfortunately no-one mentioned, is my gr.9, 10 grades. My grades are heavily going up (upward trend). This is due to my coming-of-age (which I will stay consistent in my essay.

I hope the Ivies will understand this and see this as no problem.

bump bump bump

You’ve bumped like 5 times already…

You have a chance everywhere (and I use that liberally). No one knows yours essays, recommendations, or interview, so you will not get an accurate assessment of your “chances” here. These subjectives will now be the most important aspects of your application, seeing that your academic profile is clearly up to par.

The numbers only get you through the door; the intangibles dictate whether you get in or not.

May I ask why you want to go to these schools?
