Legacy:
Harvard - Grandfather and Great-Uncle (not much, but great-uncle is writing me a recommendation... and I realize my chance is extremely unlikely)

Columbia - Grandfather was a professor, Mother went for grad school, Moot Court Award named after my great-grandfather (same as Harvard in terms of chance)

Williams - Just about everyone on my dad's side of the family went there, swimming scholarship named after my cousin (same as Harvard/Columbia in terms of chance)

Bard - Not a legacy, however my father is very good friends with the President of the college

SUNY Binghamton - My brother goes there

Harvard, Williams, Bard, and Binghamton are my current top choices. The first two are extreme reaches and the latter two are matches/mild reaches.

Please chance me in terms of good schools and whatnot.

bump... please?

anyone? anyone? beuller? anyone?

Since youre from New York, you have an advantage, as many people from New York are offered a place in top schools. That being said, try to bring up your already amazing average. What helps, I think, is if you are musically-inclined, as you have achieved 100 in your music courses. If you also do music outside of school, universities are sure to see your passion. With a 2250+ (more preferrably 2300+) SAT score, and luck, you are sure to gain admission to a great school.

Thanks, Diaphontes.

being from New York just makes it harder to get into top schools, where NY and other states like New Jersey are overrepresented in the applicant pool.

Top schools readily admit roughly the same amount of applicants from these overresepresented states every year.

Exactly, and many, many students apply from these overrepresented areas. Thus, a smaller percentage of NY students are accepted, as opposed to Arkansas students.

With a high SAT/ACT... sure. You know, if you don't like your SAT score, taking the ACT might help... some people do drastically better on it, and all universities accept either.

i agree with savs and if you are into musical arts, carnegie melon is the way to go

Thanks. And I'm trying to sign up for the ACTs (except I was blocked out from every school in a 3 hour radius) so I'm mildly freaking out about them. But I'm just going to take them in the fall (along with the SATs again).

YOU HAVE lot of connections

wow, great stats. Come to Harvard with me Ms Lilygraces

lol. don't lie Angel.

Also, an update:

My ACT score was a 27 (and I'm retaking).

I'm from Westchester too (briarcliff, w00t =P), and if you want Harvard then your scores need to be higher. But if you can bring up your ACT to like a 32, with your connections, you stand a chance

But those connections at Williams and Columbia are really nice. You can stand to have your scores a little on the low side for them. All your awards and ECs are so good that I feel they could compensate. If you bring your scores up, I would say high fit/low reach for both

And I know that one of the worst things about Westchester schools is the fact that you can have a 4.0 and be in the second decile. =/ I'm in a similar-ish situation

P.S Have you done NYSSMA Area-All State / All-State before for chorus or band?

I did NYSSMA until the 5th grade and stopped due to the fact that I seemed to get sick right before I always played AND I had a bad experience (my teacher switched my piece the night before I had to play... Too stressful for me, etc, etc).

I'm definitely gonna bring up my scores, or at least try to. I'm retaking my SAT after a PR course and some self-studying (Oct test), I'm going to retake my SAT II's after a LOT of self-studying (Nov test), and I'm going to retake the ACT and definitely shoot for a 30+ because it seems plausible.

And Briarcliff is REALLY close to me. I'm in Sleepy Hollow. Those situations are the worst where if you lived just about any where else, you'd be top 10 easily, BUT NO. lol.

Oh wow! Yeah, I've taken just about every standardized test at your school. I know some sleepy hollow kids. Greg V.? Yeah, anyway! I almost moved last year to Ohio (my dad got a job out there) and I am about top of second decile bottom of first at Briarcliff and I found out that if I moved there I would have been top 5%. It's kinda annoying to be from such a competitive area =/

Indeed. And Greg is one of my best friends!

I would very much have liked to chance you, although Harvard is the only school on your list that I can actually recognize (I vaguely recall seeing your other ones somewhere... sorry :( ).

I'd say Harvard is a bit of a High Reach for you, even with the legacy.

This post is more of a courtesy bump -- better than nothing, right?

Harvard- Crapshoot.
Williams- Low reach (although, I can't really tell since you didn't post your scores lol)
Bard- Match.
I haven't heard of the other one :(.

You have awesome ECs good luck :).
Chance me por favor...
