Chance me I guess or give advice

Hi there. I’ve been lurking on CC for a while now and since the end of my junior year is coming, I thought I would pop in and ask the several questions I’ve been wondering about.

SAT: 1580
ACT: 35
PSAT: 1500 (Will be NMS)

I’ll be taking both of these tests again as I’m shooting for perfection.

GPA UW: 4.0
Weighted: 5.3
CR: 20/900 (Unweighted electives like theatre pulled me down a bit)
Capstone diploma
15 APs, 8 DEs

Member of a professional opera company, won selective national awards in theatre. Officer for 8 clubs, including 3 president positions, 400+ hours of service. Plenty of state and national awards in a variety of organizations, ranging from arts, stem, humanities, etc. 2 internships. Hoping for an officer position in a state organization, but won’t know until April. Private tutor for special education students.

Chances for schools? Scholarships?

University of Florida
Florida State
University of Georgia
Emory
Vanderbilt
Duke
UNC Chapel Hill
Brown
University of Pennsylvania

Academic interests?

Psychology. Depending on the school I would like to do a Cognitive Psychology & Linguistics dual degree. They have this program at Emory and Brown. Other schools I would just major in Psychology or a specialized psych field depending on what is available, and a double linguistics major if offered. I have done research and an internship in psychology

I can give more information about ECs if necessary but I figured the numbers would be sufficient.

For your interests, it might be good to consider Vassar, Wesleyan and Pitzer for your greater list, but, overall, you appear to be on the right track.

your scores are great, but this comment implies an attitude about the college process that i would not recommend. especially because of covid, test scores are not nearly as important as they have been in the past. i’d use your time doing something you enjoy or working on supplements instead of cramming for a test you have already achieved highly at.

take a deep breath. the college process is stressful and you have all of senior year to get antsy about it. enjoy your summer and don’t freak out.

I suggest that you think hard about how you present your ECs:

  • Member of a professional opera company, won selective national awards in theatre.

If you are an active, performing, member, that, in itself, is a full load

  • 400+ hours of service.
  • Officer for 8 clubs, including 3 president positions

So when I read that I think '8 clubs?! how meaningful could the involvement be?! are the clubs and the service hours duplicates? how much is really involved in being “president” of three of them? how does is a student who is winning national awards as part of a professional opera company have time for all that? And then I keep reading and see:

  • Plenty of state and national awards in a variety of organizations, ranging from arts, stem, humanities, etc.

*and think- wait- this kid is getting national awards in arts, science and humanities? where does s/he find the time to be at national level in 3 time-intensive arenas?

  • 2 internships.
  • Hoping for an officer position in a state organization, but won’t know until April.
  • Private tutor for special education students.

To be clear: I take you at your word that you have done all these things. What I am saying is that AOs are going to read your app and ask themselves similar questions. Be careful not to over-egg the pudding.

Focus and structure how you present your ECs in a way that showcases the ones that are most important to you, and that represent the most commitment and growth over time.
