Chance me, I'll chance back? Brown, CMU, NYU, UCLA and Berkeley

I live in California, so most of these colleges are out of state. Brown is just me being extremely hopeful (: Carnegie Mellon is my first (somewhat realistic) choice.

GPA - around 3.9
SAT - 2230 (math 770, reading 760, writing 700)
SAT subject - 800 math, planning on taking physics and bio this year
around 200 hours of community service to one club
taken dance and piano for almost 10 years (no awards)
4 on AP test for both AP Euro and AP Calc AB, and I'm taking AP Physics C and AP Calc BC this year
not in top 10th percent for school (my school is crazy smart), but in top 25
My grades are mostly A's with some B's, but I got a C last tri in AP Physics C. This tri I know it'll be an A, does that make up for it?
Also I've been in band all three years and I'm first chair/section leader.
Other than that, I don't think anything stands out?
Majors that interest me are Industrial Design and Cognitive Science.

Thanks!

3.9 unweighted?

Yeah, unweighted. Weighted it’s about the same, because I got B’s in some AP courses

You have a chance at all of your options, but Brown is going to be tough because of the competition of the app pool! Good luck!

I applied to most of the schools that you did, and let me tell you, your SAT and GPA are higher than mine! That being said, I think you’re in the average range for UCLA, UC Berkeley, and NYU. The others are more of a reach seeing that your ECs aren’t on par with your numbers. You still have a great shot though!

You definitely have a chance at CMU, NYU, UCLA and Berkeley. Brown might be a bit of a reach because the acceptance rate is only 9% and everyone who applies is all so good. Although you still have a chance because your grades are great and same with your ECs. It’s good that you have a field you’re interested in. I heard that improves your chances because it shows you’re passionate about something! Good luck! :)

Bump  more opinions, please?

Strengths:

 • Great SAT scores! If you’re applying for the term starting Fall 2013, you should definitely consider some more ivies (especially Cornell seeing that they only consider reading and maths.)
 • Great GPA

Weaknesses:
Your EC’s are quite weak compared with your numbers. If you’re not in senior or junior year yet, consider taking up something you’re really passionate about. Maybe start a club to do with Brain Cognitive sciences? Consider MIT as well; they have a great Brain Cognitive sciences department.

Other than that, your numbers are solid, but your EC’s might drag you down a bit. But if you write killer essays, you’re gonna get into all of those schools! Good luck!

Chance me please?

I think youve got a good shot at all those colleges, high gpa, high sat score. Decent EC. Goodluck! Chance me back please

Strength: scores, GPA, volunteer hours
Weakness: class rank, lack of depth & breadth in EC’s
If you’re not a senior, I would suggest doing an internship at a Design business/ volunteering at a Cognitive Science lab! Anything to show your interest in those fields:)

Brown-low reach
CMU-match
NYU-match
UCLA-match
Berkeley-match

I’m applying for an art/design course at CMU over the summer, hopefully I’ll get in! I’m still scared about those B’s and that C :(

Your overall GPA is good, and if you get an A this tri and next, you should be fine in ironing over that C.

Brown is a huge reach because of your extracurriculars, but you have very good chances with CMU, NYU, UCLA, and Berkeley. You’ll almost definitely get into at least one of those four.

bummmmmmmmmmmmmp :)

The scores are very good and your academic rigor is great! With all of your volunteer hours, you sure look appealing as an applicant. I am not sure, but I know CMU has a big emphasis on music, so your music/dance background should help match with your grades and make you a very realistic candidate for all those schools!

I think you have a great chance at all of the schools you suggested. Of course, Brown being an Ivy is going to be tougher to get into due to the kind of EC’s they expect. You have been taking piano and dance for ten years, so I am sure you have a great skill set. I would suggested signing up for some competitions so that you can showcase your skills and commitment on an app. It would diversify your app and make you more of a unique applicant. Also, I would suggest working an internship over the summer with a design firm. You may end up doing basic tasks, but the experience is good and I’m sure they would be happy to have you. :)

“Reach” for all except NYU.

Your test scores are looking good and as long as you bring up your B’s and C you should be alright in that department… Maybe get the teacher who gave you a C to write a recommendation letter for you after you get an A? That would provide excellent support in helping to reduce the negative effects of the C. You should really try to get some more EC’s though, and an internship (as previously posted) would be impressive. So I’m thinking something like Brown-reach, CMU-low reach, Berkeley-match/very low reach, UCLA-match, NYU-match.

Yes, I was thinking of getting that teacher to write me a letter. I’ve had him for other science classes in which I was at the top of the class, and we’re still on really good terms so that should be no problem! Thanks

Just get more involved and give back to the community and you should be good! yes even for brown.
Best of luck

i think you in at all of those except brown. the couple of B’s/C shouldn’t really be an issue if the rest of your academic stats are great. i think you definitely have a shot at Brown (it’s a reach right now). If you shore up your EC’s, you’ll be an extremely competitive applicant there. Good luck!
