I am a senior right now who is wondering what the chances would be to get into Cooper Union (Engineering), CMU’s (MCS) or NYU (CAS or Stern). Thank you all in advance (Also, this is my first post and first time using this site, so please let me know if I’m doing anything wrong)
GPA UW: (I think around 3.4)
GPA W: (around 3.7)
I am unsure of my GPA because my school uses the 4.5 scale (as opposed to the 4.0 scale).
On that scale, my UW is 3.53 and my W:3.83
ACT: 33
SuperScore ACT: 34 (doesn’t matter because none of these schools super score)
As for my ECs I have interned at a technology company and won numerous state rewards in piano.
My essay should be strong but my RECs are meh.
FInally, I am working really hard my senior year to bring up my GPA, however I am afraid colleges won’t really look at it. I am currently taking five AP classes out of seven, and pulling straight As in all but AB CALC and AP Lit (both B+)
Once again, thank you all for reading this, I really appreciate it.
Unfortunately, I think these schools are slightly out of reach as all three of these schools are very selective. Your act is very strong but your GPA will be a weakpoint. Don’t give up hope though as with your stats you can still go somewhere great. Personally, I would recommend applying to SUNY Binghamton as they have a very strong business school. Good luck! http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1939359-chance-me-please.html#latest
OK, so I’ll rough out some percentage chances for you.
First, at Cooper. Reach here, but possible. While your ACT is good, your GPA is well below what they’re looking for. I’d say you’ve got a 15% chance here.
Next, CMU. Again a reach, but more probable than cooper. Probably about a 20-25% chance here. (MCS means college of science, right? If you’re applying to the college of computer science, then your odds will drop to more like 10-15%)
Finally, NYU. Your best shot of all of these. probably a 50% chance here.
First, for Cooper Union-
I know this school is notoriously selective, so it may be a little rough considering your EC’s and how you think your rec’s may be. You do have a solid ACT score though, so that may help out.
For CMU-
You have a little better of a chance here, but it may still be a little difficult. I’d say maybe a 25-35% chance for you?
And NYU-
I think your best chance may be at NYU, as while they are still very selective, their acceptance rate is the highest of all three. You probably have a 50/50 chance. I did know someone with a lower ACT score and around the same GPA from my school who got in, so you really never know.
Thank you so much for replying. Also I noticed that you said I had weak ECs but I only mentioned the ones that were really important to me
I am also Varsity Tennis and work as a part time manager at a tennis club.
I am Vice President of the Anime Club and developer of its website (rising9.com)
I am in TV Crew, Robotics, and I accompany the school chorus and school Orchestra as a pianist
Strongest ECs:
I have won many piano awards in state and merit scholarship in piano
I had an internship in a financial technology company
@andyprep Probably not that majorly, maybe around a 5% bump for all? Unless you can craft a great story about how piano and music changed your life, and how much they mean to you, or how you found a super unique community within an anime club. The only way to realllllllly impact any ECs are to talk about them in an essay. If you do that effectively, you can really help your chances, maybe more like a 10-15% boost.
Yeah I think your gonna get into NYU I know a friend with similar stats and she got in early. I think you should work on Communitu service and giving back. It would really highlight your service and what you plan to do after college.
GPA is pretty low. But your ACT score is good! No one can truly predict your chances. Cooper Union will be a bit tougher, but I think NYU and CMU are good schools to strive for.
That being said, I think it will all boil down to essays and how well you present yourself.
