Chance me? I'm a troubled student but interested in pursuing Bio.

I've been going through some tough times recently, and my GPA has taken a hit.
Freshman year: 4.0 unweighted
Sophomore year: 4.0 unweighted, I took two honors class.
This year: I've been under a lot of stress, and I think I may have depression [need to get it checked out soon] but basically, I'm taking 6 classes, all APs or Honors, but it seems as if I'm going to get a C and a B.

10th grade: all A's
Principles of Business
French 3
PE Dance
World Lit
Pre Calc Honors
Chem Honors
World History

11th grade:
French 4 Honors - A
AP US History - A
Literature Honors - C
Chem AP- A
Music Theory AP- A
Calc B/C- either a B, or a C don't know yet

SAT- Haven't taken yet, but from practice exams the score should be 2200+

Extracurriculars:
2 year dance team member
Interned over the summer as an article writer for a startup company
Volunteer at a Children's daycare program over the summer
attended NSLC
Volunteer at an adult's special needs program
[my volunteering is kind of random, it's been hard to commit because dance team is so time consuming]

I plan to get a job soon or volunteer more frequently.
Officer of my school's Website Club

Note: I was also suspended once for academic dishonesty... :( :(

:(

If I work really hard to improve myself next semester, what are my chances at:
UC Berkeley
UCLA
UCSD

All - in, You need to calm down god one c or b won’t hurt you.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/829019-list-safe-enough-will-chance-back.html

Really? But I’m getting TWO…

I don’t think one b & one c will hurt your chances. youve got good stats other than that & i think youve got good chances at uc berkeley & ucla.

the suspension for academic dishonesty sounds troubled though. im not sure how much schools actually take that into consideration, but since its ACADEMIC DISHONESTY they may think youre a cheater. I’m really not sure. Good luck.

You may want to explain the academic dishonesty in your app. I’d say that’s more worrying than your two B’s/C’s.

Right. It was a huge misunderstanding. My school MIGHT expunge the record but I’m not counting on it.

You’re grades are pretty good, SAT sounds great biggest problem looks like Academic Dishonesty. Please explain that and give reasons as to why it happened and won’t happen again. A C may hurt you a little but its only one semester so not too big of a deal.

Yeah :frowning:
I’m just really worried because the UC’s are getting more and more competitive with each passing year.

The academic dishonesty wil really hurt you. Your other stats are strong enough to get in but that will really get you unless there is a very good reason for it. Also the bad grades junior year may impact your chances, grade trend is very important and for an admissions officer, it looks like your going down. But hopefully your senior grades are good and you have a chance

Yeah, my bad grades are due partially to some difficulties I encountered this year, like depression, really bad headaches, and poor health. Is there somewhere I can explain this on the app? :(

I think the academic dishonesty might hurt you…it depends on what will be written on your report to the colleges. But if you’re a resident of California, its usually very easy to get into the UC schools.

Ill put it simply. The average student accepted into Berkeley in 2008 was a 3.86…not only does it look like your schedule is packed even with your B/C your GPA is well above the average. Mind you this is the average ACCEPTED berk. student. This means that you will well above the 75%`80% percentile in your application pool to berkeley. As stated before the academic dishonesty might count against you. Again using Berkeley as an example, they have very serious problems with academic dishonesty. Many of their intro programs [ chem bio ect.] freshman year are notorious because of the amount of cheating that goes on. Students go as far as to steal the lab notebooks of others before an upcoming test. It is because of reputations like this that Berkeley as well as the UCs reallllyyy dislike academic dishonesty from high school applicants. However even with that taint on your app. I honestly think you will be an extremely competitive candidate at all of the UCs. If you are really worried about the academic dishonesty thing I would advise actually talking about it in your app rather than trying to hide it. Admissions officers will think that you actually cheated and have no remorse for it if you just tuck it away somewhere. My advice would be to bring it out and openly discuss why exactly it occurred and how it has changed you. Hope this helps! Good luck!

bump 10 characters

Is there anyway I can boost my application with the B and the C on it? The B I’m not THAT worried about, the the C… :(

bump can anyone else help out?

You should be in as long as they dont flip out because of you getting suspended
Chance back please

I suffer from depression and anxiety, and my B and C can be partially attributed to that. I don’t want to blame poor grades on my condition, but it really did handicap me this year. It was really hard to attend schools some days, but I still tried my best and managed to pull off mostly A’s. The B and the C don’t really show my full potential. Anywhere I can explain this on the UC app? Thanks.

Just continue strong.

I got into Stanford, but at one time, I was stupid enough to organize an entire class rebellion against my teacher’s essay with plagiarism.

What matters is that you learned from it I’d say. Unless it was something really huge.
