Hey, Iam an international student from Asia looking forward to do my undergrad in BSC COMP SCIENCE in Canada. I have an overall predicted score of 94% CBSE board but i dont have good extracurriculars.
My IELTS score is 8 and SAT score 1360.
Could someone please guide me to which universities should i apply to and could i get into the top unis like UofToronto, McGill, UAlberta, BritishColumbia, Uottawa.
you should review each school’s average SAT score.
And if you have a good explanation for your lack of EC, make sure to highlight that.
You might want to ask a mod to move this to the Canada forum http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/canada/ for better responses.
I don’t get the impression Canadian schools care too much about ECs.
Multiple years ago one daughter applied to McGill and they did not even ask about ECs. Somewhat more recently my other daughter applied to smaller universities in Canada which again did not ask about ECs. I do not think that your ECs will be a problem.
I am confident that admissions at Canadian universities will be familiar with the grading system used in your country. Unfortunately I am not. Can you tell us how your grades compared to others in your high school?
thanks for the comment…my percentage would convert to a 3.7 GPA approximately…and also, since i am an international student, do the unis value the SAT exam
“do the unis value the SAT exam”
We live in the US, but both daughters at least applied to universities in Canada (and were accepted). One is currently at university in Canada.
In most normal years, the many large, very good, and well known universities in Canada require the SAT for students from the US. Because of the current pandemic, my understanding is that many have gone SAT-optional for this year. However, you will need to look at their web sites to know which are SAT optional. Also I do not know whether they require the SAT for international students from other countries, such as Dubai. Again each of them should specify this on their web sites. I do not know whether 1360 on the SAT would be sufficient for McGill, Toronto, UBC, or Alberta (or for Waterloo for CS). However, it should be good for most universities in Canada, including many very good universities.
There are a small number of small “primarily undergraduate” universities in Canada. Most of them are normally SAT optional (the exception is Acadia, which does not consider the SAT at all). You might want to look at St Francis Xavier in Nova Scotia in addition to the other schools you are considering. It is quite good and is in an attractive small town, but is not necessarily the easiest to get to from Europe (it is a two hour drive from the Halifax airport).
You also might want to consider Simon Fraser University in Vancouver.
I think that with your grades you should be able to get accepted to very good universities in Canada. Computer Science is generally a competitive field for admissions so I am not completely sure which very good schools you are likely to get accepted to. You might want to apply to a range of schools (perhaps all of the ones that you mentioned plus StFX and SFU) and see where you get accepted.
Hey! Me too applying for UBC recently high school graduated student of CBSE board from India with an average of 98.4% in science stream. I have bunch of ECs as I am gonna apply for KMILOT full-ride scholarship but not sure if they are really as impressive as they could be taken into consideration.
