Chance Me: Indian Male, 3.7, 1480 SAT for BSMD programs and Pre-Med

do you recommend any specific BSDO programs with low stats that fit mine?

Elephant in the room question. Why do you need a BS/DO or BS/MD program. The vast majority of doctors go the traditional undergrad route and then apply to medical school.

You are a senior nowā€¦have you looked into LECOM. If you do, make sure you have applied to the partner schools. @momsearcheng can explain.

Are you in the North Fulton, Gwinnett or Cobb counties? If so, are you at one of the competitive schools there? What is your class rank?

The main reason I am applying to BS/MD and BS/DO programs is because nobody wants to apply to med school again. Itā€™s much easier to have automatic acceptance into a med school. And if I do not get into any of the combined programs, I can always spend a year at GSU and transfer to another school for my 4 years of undergrad.

My county does not do class rank, but I am safely within the top 20% of my class.

Nope. The acceptance rate to these BS/MD and BS/DO programs is as competitive as elite college acceptances. You have some very very highly competitive programs on your list above (e.g. Brown). There is nothing ā€œeasyā€ about getting accepted.

Also, read the fine print. Some DO require an interview. Some DO require a minimum MCAT score. And I think ALL require a minimum GPA to progress to the medical school part.

And MOST doctors DO apply to medical school via the traditional route.

Nobody wants to apply to med school again? Pretty sure this is completely false. @WayOutWestMom, what is the percentage of students that go the traditional route vs BS/MD or BS/D0

Riddle me this. If 5% of kids go to BSMD, where are the rest of the 95% supposed to go? I guarantee you that if students were given guaranteed admission into med school during their senior year of high school, 100% of the students would take that offer.

The MCAT and interview is not the problem for meā€¦ I could honestly care less about that. Its just getting into the program. And once again, most doctors apply to med school the traditional route because they are either unsure about the field of medicine, or they couldnā€™t get into a bsmd program.

Do you have a source for your comment?

Go over to the medical school forum here. There is a student there who applied to and got accepted at some BS/MD programs but chose Vanderbiltā€¦traditional routeā€¦and had to apply to medical school.

You have no idea about the coursework and the amount of information you need to present well to become a doctor. Will you do well in college sciencesā€¦things like organic chemistry, etc?

it might be because the bsmd program they got into was not that great compared to the highly prestigious pre-med program that vandy has to offer.

Not true. The doctor in my family had other things they also wanted to do before applying to medical school. You are making some broad and inaccurate assumptions. There are some brilliant students who go the traditional routeā€¦because they want to.

True, but its always nice to have the option.

Only 4% of physicians graduate from a combined program. That mean 96% of medical grads apply to med school following the traditional path. 4 years undergrad-> apply to med school.

Since GA doesnā€™t have an instate BA/DO program and with so-so stats for a combined programā€” your best best is LECOM or NOVA-FL. Both are still reaches.

NOTE: you may need in-person shadowing of DO to apply to BA/DO programs. Most DO programs require a LOR from a practicing DO whom you have shadowed.

I can get one from a practicing DO. I shadowed a hand surgeon that was a DO.

So general question? is the mix of schools I am applying to okay? 6 BSMD and 9 traditional Pre-medemphasized text

@WayOutWestMom @thumper1 @CottonTales

Your traditional undergrad list is VERY reachy. Unless you are Ok with attending GSA for a year or two, Iā€™d add more matches and safeties to your application list.

I already got into Augusta and GSU. UAB, VCU, and mercer are all safeties. I have to get into the school and then apply to their bsmd program seperately.

If you are happy with your safety school, then this is fine. And maybe UGA as an instate resident. Your reach schools are just that. VERY VERY low acceptance rates. IOW, 90% or more get rejected. In your reach list, I personally donā€™t see one school where you have a possibility of acceptance. Your GPA and your SAT score just isnā€™t where it would need to be for these highly competitive colleges for admission. But Iā€™m not an adcomā€¦so apply and see.
