Extra Curriculars:
Soccer:
-Played since I was 3. Play for a premier soccer club ranked 1 or 2 in the state for the past 8 years and have been runners up in the United States Midwest Regional League. In the past years we have been State Cup Semi-Finalists twice.
-Started all 4 years on Varsity (Division I). Runners up in our league my Freshman Year. Sophomore Year I earned Honorable Mention all league honors. Junior Year we were ranked 8th in our state, we won our league, and made it to the District finals in the tournament. I received First Team All league and Second Team All district. Senior year I anticipate first team all league, first team all district, that we will win the league and make it to the final four in the state.
-I played for my states Olympic Soccer Team for my age group and participated in the regional competition.

Football:
-I started playing football my Junior year where I am the kicker and received my varsity letter. I am ranked the 7th best Kicker in the state and 144th in the country (participated in Harvard kicking camp and there is a CHANCE that I may be recruited)

Tennis:
-Played all four years, only played varsity my Junior and Senior years. We were league runner up my Junior year.

Basketball:
-I only played my freshman year where I started all games as the center. (Should I even include this? My thought is that it explains why I did not do debate... Idk)

Orchestra:
I've been playing the cello since I was in fifth grade. I was the assistant principal cellist for my local youth orchestra. I played in an international youth orchestra where I traveled to Hungary, Germany, and Poland, and I am currently the Principal cellist for this orchestra. I serve as the principal cellist for my school orchestra, and I have received superior ratings on class A solos for the past 4 years. I have performed solos with my school orchestra and international orchestra as well. Finally, I was a member of the North American Honors Performance Series where I played in Carnegie Hall as a Junior.

Debate:
-I did debate grades 10-12. As a Sophomore I qualified for states in Public forum and as a Junior I qualified for states in public forum and I was a finalist at the National Qualifying tournament.

Mock Trial:
-I did mock trial as an attorney grades 9-12. As a freshman I qualified for regionals. As a Sophomore I participated in the Empire International Mock Trial Invitational where my team placed 9th internationally, defeating Korea and Ireland. That same year my team made it to the Semi-Finals of the state competition. As a Junior my team also made it to the state semi-finals.

Science:
-The summer after my Sophomore year I conducted and independent research project with the aid of a local university on relieving alcohol addiction by using an alcohol preferring rat model. With this project I wrote a 15 page paper. I qualified for states with a superior rating, and won first place in my state with my project. This allowed my to participate in the National Junior Science and Humanities Symposium in Washington D.C.

Boy Scouts:
-I was only a boy scout up until my freshman year, and I earned the distinction of a first class scout (not very good). I did, however, travel to the Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico where I hiked through the mountains for 10 days with 7 other scouts.

Volunteering:
-The summer after my Sophomore year I volunteered at a research lab where I aided in multiple projects and documented probably around 100 hours.
-I will be volunteering at a local hospital this fall probably only 4 hours a week though.
-After my Freshman year I went with my church on a mission trip to Tennessee where we aided flood victims by clearing out their houses and repairing damage caused by the floods.

Work Experience:
-The summer after my Junior year I interned at a local law firm. Probably 30+ hours a week.

School Organizations:
-Class Representative for my student government
-National Honors Society member
-Member of the Math club
-Member of the Spanish club
-Student Diplomat

Essays/Recommendations:
-My essays and recommendations should be quite good

Supplements:
-I am currently working on a cello recording consisting of excerpts (dont have time for the whole thing) of the first movement of the Elgar Cello Concerto and the first movement of the Haydn Cello Concerto, both first class pieces.
-I intend on including my science research paper in my application
-I may include a soccer/football highlight video. Thoughts?

Let me know what you think! Ill chance you back! :)

Haha, at first I was hoping I’d get chanced back but now I don’t even want to post my stats…
But anyway, I think you’re an amazingly well rounded student and you seem to excel in much of what you do, which is, of course, sought after by the Ivies. I’m tempted to say you’ll be accepted by at least one. Of course, plan to have a safety school, but it seems that you’ve got a nice shot at getting in. Granted, it’s not certain that you WILL, but you do seem to be a good candidate. I wish you MUCH luck and I hope you get in to a school you find preferable :)

You should Have no trouble in getting into the lower ranked ivies(cornell, dartmouth, and brown) as well as northwestern, duke, and uchicago with your current stats. With that said, your SATs might prevent you from getting into the Harvard, Yale, or Princeton. Nevertheless, I wouldn’t recommend that you waste time retaking the SATs. Just make sure that your essays are top-notch and you should be fine.

… wow. I wish I could have this type of record!

I’d say you have a fair-good shot :D.

Thanks guys! Appreciate the feedback! Make sure you post your link so I can chance you back!

bump (already page 2…)

Can you get recruited?

First, I’d like to congratulate you on a well rounded and impressive list of accomplishments. You really have done a great job so far.

Now, before I begin, I want to say, when chancing for the Ivies, I am always err on the side of skepticism (because acceptance rates are so low). Furthermore, I tend to try and point out the weaknesses I see in an applicant, rather than the strengths. This is because, well, that’s what I believe what the admissions officers will be looking for. So, let me begin with my initial thoughts.

1) Your SAT scores are on the low end for an Ivy League applicant. I don’t think this is a major weakness – the most important item in an application is a transcript, and you do strongly there. However, I’d recommend trying to take it once more, and to only focus on reading/writing. I think it will be a red flag to an Ivy for having a 640 on reading.

2) I strongly recommend you do not include the Basketball and Boy Scouts as extracurricular activities in your common application. The app asks for only your primary activities, and I fear colleges might think you are trying to only pad your extracurriculars if you include activities that you only were involved in your freshman year, which may lead them to give less weight to the activities that you actually truly have been dedicated to. Besides that, they don’t add too much to the application. Though I understand why you might want to include the basketball to explain why you weren’t in debate your freshman year, that explanation is unnecessary. Being in an activity for three years is enough for a college to see you were at least involved in it.

3) There is very limited leadership in your extracurriculars. Ivies always like seeing applicants being in a leadership position somewhere in their extracurriculars, and the only leadership I see is being principal cellist in your school orchestra, which barely counts as a leadership position at all, at least in the traditional sense. The only other place that might count is being a “class representative.” Is this an elected position by the student body? If so, that definitely counts, but if not, once again, it barely does.

4) I strongly suggest only including one supplement, and absolutely no more than two. Only include a supplement if you believe it is absolutely necessary to prove your strength in one area. Keep in mind the admissions officers have thousands of other applications to go through, so they don’t like seeing supplements unless they add something. With that said, I think the strongest supplement for you to include would be the science research paper – it will shed light on the research you did. Other than that, it is your call on whether or not to send the recording; if you think it will really make you stand out, then by all means, send it, but if not, don’t. Lastly, I recommend not sending soccer/football highlights.

5) This is somewhat like my 3), but there are a lot of extracurriculars in your list that may look like resume padding to an admissions officer. You are obviously invested in soccer and football, and your internship/research is AWESOME, but other than that, a lot of the strength of your application depends on your area’s circumstances and where you live. For example, how difficult is it to qualify in state for debate? It might be very competitive, in which case that looks great on your application, but on the other hand, if your state is like mine, if all you have to really do is show up at the district tournament to qualify for state, that starts looking less impressive. I bring up this point not to say that it is a weakness (because I really have no idea how competitive these activities are in your state), but if they aren’t too competitive at all, that is a potential weakness.

I apologize for the length of this post, but I always try to be thorough when doing chances. All in all, the application is still very strong. The top Ivies and Stanford are still reach schools, because they are for everybody. I’d say the lower Ivies are low reach schools, just because they are still very competitive – however, I’d be VERY surprised if you didn’t get into at least one or two of them (if not more). You are definitely in at Duke, in my opinion, and, to be honest, I’m not familiar enough with the other schools’ admissions to make a prediction. So, summed up, still apply for safety schools if everything goes wrong, but I’d still be very surprised if you didn’t make it into one of the schools you listed. Though your application has a few weaknesses (as everybody’s does), it is still very strong overall.

please do!

Ok your SAT scores seem to really kill the other talents you have, so if those were just a bit higher, at 2200 atleast, you could get there easier.
Grades + extra curricular stuff is so perfect.

Thanks guys! I have a chance to be recruited as a kicker at Harvard. There are definately people better than me who went to the recruiting camps I went to, but based on the academic index I’m not sure if they are as qualified as me academically, which is big for the ivy league schools. Additionally, a lot of them didnt have Harvard as their number one. So I probably have a chance, but not likely.

Bummmppppp

I pretty much agree with all that has been said above me. You are a really good student and I think you have a really good chance. There’s not much you can say really. You’re fine.

Based on the information you have given, you wouldn’t have a very hard time getting into UChicago, Northwestern, and Duke (although, they are quite competitive). As for Stanford and the Ivies, you’ll have a harder time with those… obviously. Your ECs, grades, and tests scores (and no, 2100 or any score around that is NOT low) are good enough as to allow you to present yourself a competitive applicant.

Thanks guys! Really appreciate it!

Bump Bump Bump

Sorry, I forgot to put this. Since I chanced you on here, could you chance me at http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1368810-chanes-hys-among-others-thanks.html</a> . Sorry for the typo in the title… xD

Haha yah I was looking for a link but I didnt see it… Sure thing!

Wow… this makes me feel nowhere near good enough :expressionless:
But I’m sure your chances of getting into any of the schools you mentioned are fantastic! Good luck!
See my thread please?

WOW, Your extracurricular activities are off the charts. So many and so much success. It’s pretty apparent that you’re good at whatever you do. But I just think that you haven’t consistently performed well on standardized test scores. You haven’t taken any subject tests yet and you’re SAT is on the low end of the spectrum for HPYS. I know people with EC’s like yours and with 2330’s+ that have gotten rejected from those four schools (my sis lol and my current reading tutor). But you should have no problem getting into Cornell, Brown, Penn, and Northwestern. You have a good shot at the others but I’m inclined to say <50% chance. But hey, probably better than my chances lol. Please chance me back! Thanks and good luck.
