chance me! (Ivys, HS class of 2012)

GPA: 3.9 (on a 4.33 scale... I don't know how that's gonna translate)
SAT IIs: 740/US History, 730/Biology M, predicting the mid to high 700s for World History (taking this in the spring)
PLAN (ACT for sophomores): 30* (should get a 32-34, see below)

My school/location: Top 500 public school in the Midwest (most underrepresented area at Columbia, with only 8% of the student body from the Midwest).

Sophomore year classes: Photo I, Honors Biology, Honors Am. Lit, Adv. Journ. I, AP US History, Geometry College Prep (not in honors), French III
Junior: AP Microeconomics, Honors Chemistry, AP Lang, Adv. Journ. II, AP Euro, Alg. II CP, French IV Honors
Senior (guessing): AP Photo, AP Bio, AP Lang, Adv. Journ. III, AP Gov, Pre-calc, AP French V (plus some other stuff like art history and maybe anatomy... I'm not a hundred percent on what I'm taking)

Extracurriculars:
-Involvement in journalism. Will be editor-in-chief/managing editor by senior year (assistant editor at the moment). Our paper is gosh-darn good, if I may say so myself (winner of Columbia Gold Crown). Have won state and soon national awards for writing. Helped launch our online newspaper. Interning at a local newspaper this summer.
-Founder and President of French Society. We do a lot of community service stuff, and we're going to France next summer (first time French class has gone for about ten years).
-Member of a variety of other clubs (NHS, NAHS, Key Club, etc.)
-Assists in tutoring a class of underprivileged pre-kindergartners
-Member of a young woman's empowerment group, which granted $2,500 to a local woman's charity last spring
-Cashier at local cafe (yay?)
-Was involved in youth theater ages 8-13, assistant directed play freshman year, which is the age limit of involvement (theater at my school is all musicals, can't sing)
-Varsity Gymnastics freshman year (highlight of my profile...)

SCHOOLS (in order of interest):
1. Columbia University
2. UPenn (dad is an alumni and grandpa is a retired professor of the university)
3. Univeristy of Chicago
4. Georgetown
5. Northwestern
6. a variety of back-ups in my home state

Anyways, I know I don't have all of the details, but how am I doing thus far? Thanks

*Yeah, I didn't actually pay too close attention to the exam. I obviously will for the real one. And I'm taking an ACT course, checking out some ACT books, the whole deal.
Quick question: Is it okay if I just take the ACT? My entire school career has pretty much been in preparation for this test (as in my sixth English grade teacher had us do essays that were of the same style of the ACT questions). Thanks.

Oh, and you can just chance me for the first three schools in my list (Columbia, UPenn, Chicago) if you wish :).

Oh, and will chance everyone back who chances me.

you have good extracurriculars, good scores, but im not sure about your gpa based on the scale. Your legacy at upenn will also help you out a lot. In addition, all colleges accept ACT scores so it is not necessary to take both tests unless you can get a better score in one. Please rate me at http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/high-school-life/968121-ooooo-how-i-hate-admissions.html</a></p>

bump… help mehhhhhhhh

You’re so lucky for having such great legacy connections at UPenn haha I’d say you’re golden for that!

Georgetown and Northwestern = matches which you have a great chance at, IMO!
But UofC and Columbia are more of reach schools. Especially Columbia because they get soooo many prospective journalism major applicants.

But best of luck!

Make sure you write excellent essays and keep your involvement up senior year! I’d say you have a pretty good shot at all of them, and an even better shot at UPenn!

Chance back–>

Good shot at all of them, GPA is on the weak side and ACT should be improved, which I’m sure it will. You’re def. on track. Oh, and to answer your question, yes, it’s absolutely fine to take only the ACT. Chance back? (on first pg)

You’re practically in at UPenn! Columbia is still a reach. But you definitely have a shot at the others! Good luck!

thanks guys… oh, and I’m in a summer debate day camp that’s for three weeks every summer. Won some awards in that.

Apply to all good journalism schools like Columbia. UPenn might also do. You have the clear competence and interest. You can try other schools like USC, Missouri and St John’s University (NYC), though — if you haven’t considered them. That is, if you like journalism. :)

Looks pretty good. Focus hard next year and do well on ACTs. If write a good essay you will be fine.
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/970863-what-my-chances.html</a></p>

I think you’ll stand a pretty good chance at UPenn. Maybe you want to focus on your passion a little bit (through essays and such as your ec’s don’t really show what your passion is).

Columbia may be a reach, but as long as you stand out as a person with your personality from this point on, I think you do have a reason to be hopeful.

BTW, thanks for chancing me!

Looks like you have solid ECs and an above average GPA… However, mostly everyone who applies to those schools has that… Maybe you should try taking the SATs and see if you can get some outstanding scores… BUT, the legacy at Penn should pretty much make up for anything that you might lack so I’d say definitely in there, and more like a toss up for the others!

yain, your legacy at Penn will help you but it is still is a reach given your stats. Besides Northwestern and Georgetown which are very high and high matches respectively, all your other schools are reaches, in my opinion.
