Chance me Johns Hopkins 2022 ED Neuro/Premed International Student

Hello! I’m going to grade 11 in Toronto, and I wanted to apply to JHU ED for Neuro/Premed. I’m in the TOPS program in Toronto, which is a highly competitive and advanced science and math program and so, marks aren’t as great, and so, if you could tell me if i’m on the right path, that would be awesome.

Planning to major in Neuro/Premed
Objective:
SAT I: Probably around 1580+ from all the practice test I’ve taken
SAT II: Math II 780, Biology 780 (this is just projected, probably higher b/c I’ve learnt all the material anyways)
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.94
OK i kind of need help figuring out my GPA, this is just what a website told me when it converted from ontario to usa (could someone help me pls)
Rank: Top 5%

APs: Bio, BC Calculus, and maybe physics (all 5s)
*My school doesn’t offer AP courses, and so, I have to take the exams

Subjective:
Extracurriculars:
Was an/Is an executive in: CHAINnovation (cofounder), IND (I teach neuro to hs students), Biology Club (VP), Public Speaking Club, SAC, Music Council, World Vision, STEM club, Community Surf, Mentoring, Paef (eco), ONYC (eco), Camions of Care
Is in: Eco Club, DECA, Reckoner, UKind, Choir
Volunteering: 3 Labs, Robotics Camp (taught kids), Mentoring (hs students), Toronto Zoo, STEMified, hospitals
Work: Internship at Ontario Nature, teaching music, tutoring in my neighbourhood (unpaid)
Awards: Toronto Science Fair bronze, Toronto Science Fair silver, Pascal Math Contest Distinction, Cayley Math Contest Distinction, Pascal Best in School, Most dedicated mentor, 3rd place in international singing competition at Cleveland State University, Top 10 Roleplay DECA regionals, honour roll since grade 9 (Will continue to do sci fair, and aiming for national brain bee, which i just missed last year)
Summer: Doing research and working this summer, next summer I’m going to Harvard to intern in a neuro lab (if I get a placement at JHU instead, should I go there, or would Harvard look more impressive?)

Other
Country: Canada
School Type: Public (Considered one of the best bc of the program I’m in)
Ethnicity: Asian, Sri lankan
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: 300,000+ (although, most goes to my dad’s health bill  )

Essay: I’d say the essay I’ve drafted and played around with so far is really good because it’s captivating, but I’d rather not say my hook simply bc I’m not applying yet

Questions: Would it be more advantageous for me to apply ED rather than RD? If I get a placement at JHU for next summer instead, should I go there, or would Harvard look more impressive? Need help figuring out my GPA (Do i convert from Ontario to USA, or just give a raw GPA? Do I average everything first and convert, or put in all of my marks and convert?)

Thanks!

I say you have a good shot with your EC’s. It’s hard to say for sure without real scores but if they’re as high as you predict then you’ll be good. Also how you have a 5 on the “maybe Physics” exam? Is that a predicted score again? For your question on what lab to go into, in my opinion who is a high school student working in a lab, go to the one that is more intimate so you can get more independence. Also I’m pretty sure JHU’s ED almost doubles their acceptance rate so I would do that. Lastly as a general rule for GPA any A=4 B=3 C=2 etc and for AP/IB classes A=5 B=4 C=3. Your GPA is just an average so add all those up and divide by the number of classes you have. Also in general study hall= 0 credit so don’t calculate it.

I meant that I might take AP Physics, but I’ve taken Bio and Calc. I just mistakingly put the 5 after that, sorry about that! I don’t think I’ll take it unless I’m p certain about the score I would get on it. Thank you so much for all the answers to my questions, it means a lot! I’m thinking about just going to Harvard’s lab simply because it’s in the neuroscience field, and that interests me more. Thank you once again! @drewharrahill

If your program is a top stem program, no need to take AP exams.
If your top choices are Harvard or JHU I’d go with Harvard for undergraduate, JHU for medical school
Howecer note that American medical schools typically don’t accept internationals.

@MYOS1634 TOPS is the name of the program I’m in in Toronto, and so, I don’t think it’s the program you’re referring to, and our school doesn’t offer any AP courses or IB courses, but rather “TOPS” courses. How would you point that out in an application? And for the Harvard vs. JHU, I meant for a summer internship ahah, sorry about the confusion.

Definitely on the right track. I’m a rising senior who is applying this year and debating if I should do ED or not. One thing I got told that I think applies to you is that you simply have too much stuff in regards to ECs. Granted, you could probably group into subsections (science, math, etc…) but it doesn’t tell much of a story…

What exactly are you going for? All around high achiever? It could work, especially with your scores, but colleges always love a story

You have 10 slots for EC activities on the common app and that is including slots for work experience and summer programs…

OP you bumped this thread five times in a single day. Most of us don’t check this page very frequently, so you’re going to need to give us a few days rather than a few hours too respond. You need to relax a bit. If you’re entering 11th grade youmajor. Like a year before your actually have to apply, so chancing now is hardly urgent - honestly chancing is never urgent.

Now onto the matter at hand. Honestly, it’s hard to telll at thous point. Practice test scores, while helpful in studying, aren’t particularly useful when “chancing” as your actual score can be affected by so many test-day factors (nerves, sickness, distractions, etc). That isn’t to say I doubt your ability, but I also can’t draw a conclusion without the right data.
Your GPA looks good. Your guidance counselor should tell you what to report on your apps - Hopkins will likely recalculate it using their own metric anyways.
APs don’t play much of a role in college admissions - especially not self studied APs. Take them if you want the credit, but don’t expect a self studied 5 on Calc BC to get your into Hopkins.
ECs look good especially if you’re a STEM major. Like SATursays said, make sure you can narrow the lost down to 10, meaningful ECs.
If you can land a research position at v Harvard or Hopkins, go for it. Both are impressive - just doing research in high school is impressive. Go with whichever lab/professor interests you the most.
Technically the admission rate is higher for ED, but that is skewed by the recruited and hooked students who tend to apply ED. But if you have any concerns about paying tuition, don’t apply ED.
