Chance me? Macalester, Northwestern, Carleton, Uof M twin cities, and Marquette

-female, rising senior
-Biracial (i claim both African American and Caucasian heritage)
- 3.7 weighted GPA probably 3.5 unweighted. I know it'll hurt me, but i do have an extreme rising trend. got a 4.0 unweighted for the past two semesters.
-private, competitive, college prep school in Wisconsin

-advanced classes: Honors humanities, Geometry Accelerated, Algebra 2 Accelerated, Honors Physics, Precalculus honors, AP calculus, AP European History, and AP spanish.

-EC's Dance classes (12 hrs/wk year round since the age of 3), competitive dance team, amnesty international, national honors society (for which i have been elected secretary), and managing my schools cross country team, founded an independant study group for creative writing/poetry, because no such course is available at my school.

-so far 152 hrs of service that include teaching dance classes and managing the CC team. I plan to log at least 60 more hours in the coming year.

-ACT composite 33 w/ 35 english, 33 math, 34 reading, and 28 science

-Awards: Outstanding Young Person leadership/academic award from my city's Urban League (5 years running), winning my school's annual writing contest, National Merit & National Acheivement

My daughter applied to some of the same schools: ACT 34, latina, runner. She was in at Mac and U of MN College of Biol Sc. She didn't apply to the others. I had wanted her to apply to Marquette as a safety. I think you would be very likely to get in there.

I don't know managing the CC team counts as community service or as an EC. You may want to run that by someone at your school or home. Was the dance teaching a paid position/barter for lessons? If there was an economic advantage to you, then put it as an EC.

In our experience running up the community service numbers wasn't possible due to sports and family commitments and lack of knowledge on our part that this is something people keep track of. She had some, but not crazy big amounts like some posters. Does your NHS group do service projects? Dance team perform at schools or senior centers? What do you do with Amnesty?

My opinion - you look pretty solid for those schools.

The dance teaching was volunteer. I picked it because I thought it would mesh well with my existing interest in dance. I have however held a paid position at a clothing store for a year now. should I include that in apps?

i counted managing as service because it counts as service in my school, which requires 100 hours of service for graduation. Thats the only reason i know my totals--i have to turn in forms to my school detailing what kind and how much service I do, so its all recorded.

Maybe I can try and try and step up leadership wise in Amnesty and NHS for the service/letter wrting projects we do.

thanks!

Take everything I say with a grain of salt because I've only gone through this with one child.

I would swap your cc managing and dance teaching - teaching as service and cc for an ec. Your right that the teaching expands on your love of dance.

Definitely mention your job. Having a job mean s you are reliable, can handle responsibility, have a work ethic, and are developing customer service skills that are applicable in many areas of life.

Don't know if you are a Harry Potter fan - Did you read the speech JK Rowling gave at Harvard? She mentions what a strong impact volunteering for Amnesty had on her. You can really see the influence in the books.
