Tutor at an elementary in Monterrey, Mexico. PreK- 2nd graders. Participate in summer program for four weeks. Fancied it up on my common application though.
Have done the typical community service. Trash bashes, hospital volunteer, etc. Don't want to inundate with details.

Essays are very decent and very engaging.
Recommendation letters are phenomenal. (So my counselor said. She's been at it for 29 years and says they are the best she's seen)

Hey. I am putting out there. If you'd like to chance me I would appreciate it. If not, well thanks anyways! And Good Luck to EVERYONE that is applying!

you have a realistic shot at all of em, id say in at Cornell and the other four are crapshoots, your 2200 is good coming from where you do, idk honestly i wanna say in at some of em, maybe break down your SAT's what u get on math and so forth

i'd say the weak points on your app will be the low-ish SAT subject test scores..and the fact that your EC's are somewhat, umm, narrow...
but overall, i'm sure you'll have a great chance at all these schools because of your unique background...good luck!

i think you know all of this, but I'll just ease your nerves

valedictorian in huge class
solid SAT's
mexican
first generation low income

solid EC's, though I'm not sure how good they are
demonstrates passion?

either way, good chances everywhere. calm down and hit submit...as long as your essays are great

i think you should definitely get into cornell and probably duke.

as for princeton/yale/harvard, you're obviously incredibly qualified (and your ethnicity won't hurt!) but it's such a crapshoot these days. i think you have as good a chance as anyone could

thanks a lot guys, but one question do i have to take the TOEFL?

Thanks plumsnow.. but do I have to take the TOEFL.. I was just wondering?

ooh good question... i'm not sure actually. you could probably find an answer somewhere online

You have an amazing shot at all of the schools, and I think you should definately attend an Ivy League college. Did you focus on your low income status in your personal statement, good luck! Although, you should have applied to Brown, Darthmouth because they love students with similar backgrouds as yourself. Did you consider colleges on the West Coast, i.e. Pomona College, UCLA, USC, and UCB?

scguy
No. I didn't apply to any west coast for the exception to Stanford and of course the typical texas State schools like UT, A&M, and Texas Tech. Other than that, i am pretty much all Northeast. Thanks a lot for your feedback...
But if I do get accepted into Stanford, the odds of me running are very very small. They have International Caliber runners who can seriously set the track on fire. UCLA I should have applied...
Do i need to take the TOEFL???

Since your first language is Spanish, and I assume you speak Spanish at home primarily, then TOEFL is probably required.

you will get into 90% of them, if not all, since you are mexican.

I think you do have a good shot at most of your schools because you are a) Hispanic and b) and immigrant. But, just saying, if I remember correctly, most colleges will not look at your Spanish SAT 2 seriously because Spanish is your first language. I forget which college, but at some information session, I remember hearing that they want to see SAT 2's in subjects you've learned in school.

Your commitment to sports is very good but, aside from that, your EC's are somewhat lacking in my opinion. Community service is definitely a plus, though.

Even though your minority status definitely gives you a huge advantage, I would suggest adding a safety school or two. A kid in my friend's class at Philly's biggest and best magnet school was born in Mexico, got a 2320 on his SAT, 800's on his SAT 2's (I think Math 2 and something else), is captain of varsity soccer and tennis at his school, and has like a 4.0 GPA; and he didn't get into Yale EA. Just a heads up.

Good luck, though!

Curse you affirmative action.... waves fist in air

One thing I can see hurting you is your 3's on AP exams, but besides that, I think you've got it set.

Valedictorian + Good SATs.
You'll get into at least one of them. Which I think, is good enough.

URM=in....as for the rest of us.....

This forum is the biggest bunch of racists I've ever seen. Goddamn man, affirmative action isn't hurting you. The kids who're complaining about this might not get into Harvard, but are smart kids who will get into other amazing schools. Now stop complaining and realize AA is for the betterment of this country as a whole.

The betterment of this country? By what token?

You have a really good shot at all the schools.

As for the TOEFL, you probably don't have to take it as its supposed to tell the colleges that you can speak english well enough, and I know you have definitely demonstrated that with your CR score on the SAT. That's what I've been told for schools I've applied to (UVa and Virginia Tech,) but just check with your colleges to make sure.

Hope this helped, goodluck!

well im going to be blunt here, i dont think you have that great of a shot at harvard, yale or princeton, and even cornell is a stretch, but valedictorian and pretty good SAT scores help you. Duke however i think you have an excellent chance, they have a high acceptance rate for latinos and you have a strong resume.
the IVYs are reaches, but i think you have a 70-80%chance of getting into Duke, which is a damn fine school if you ask me.
