Chance Me? (MIT, UCal-Berkeley, Stanford, Rice)

Schools (In order of preference): MIT, UCal-Berkeley, Rice, Stanford
Class of 2011 - I attend a high school that is very good academically.
Male
Field of interest: Engineering
Race: Hispanic

Class Rank: 4/375 - Approx Top 1%
(The girl ranked 5th is way behind me, so this shouldn't go any lower. Probably won't go up in ranking either, so I'm 90% sure I'll graduate with this ranking)

GPA:
On a college scale - 3.99/4.0 (We get grades every 6-weeks for every class, six times a year. I got a "B" in a class ONE time during ONE six weeks...the B was in dual enrollment History, so I hope they don't care too much...)

Weighted GPA - 4.35/5.0 (The way my school does it, a 100 in a weighted class is a 5.0, 99 is a 4.9, etc, but in an unweighted class a 100 is a 4.0, 99 is a 3.9, etc...having to take unweighted classes freshman and sophomore year really hurt)

ACT: 32

SAT: 770 Math, 600 Critical Reading, 640 Writing (2010 Total)

AP: Calc AB (Made a 5), Chemistry (Made a 5), English (made a 4), my school doesn't offer physics AP and I don't want to take Bio AP, so I'll be taking mostly dual enrollment courses next year (Economics, Poly Sci, Physics Honors (but not AP), and maybe another science course). Should I take Bio AP just to look good? I figured the schools wouldn't care too much since I'm going into engineering.

Academic Honors:

-Magna Cum Laude
-Geometry Award, Pre-Calc Award, Chemistry AP Award (My school gives these awards to the student with the highest final grade in that class out of everyone who is taking it)
-Academic/Athletic All-District

Extra Curriculars/ Honors

BAND: (with co-section leader role) - All-Area Band (Jr. Year), 1st All-Region Band (Jr. Year), 2nd All-Region Band (Soph Year), Received highest honors at State Ensemble Contest
SCHOOL SOCCER: 2 year varsity player, 3 year member
COMPETITIVE CLUB SOCCER: 12 years

Volunteering: 50-60 hours total. Volunteered for Hurricane relief efforts, food drives, and participated/helped out for some local campaigns.

Work Experience: None, sadly. Is this REALLY going to hurt me that much? It would suck to not get in because of not having work experience. Working a minimum wage job doesn't prove a damn thing.

My main goal is to rack up a few more academic/extracurricular honors, and then to get my SAT score up to 2100. I really should have studied for the critical reading portion. I'm going to apply to a good public school in my state in case I don't get into any of my dream schools.

are you from california? Berkeley is notoriously hard to get into if you’re not from Cali. From my high school, the only guy who got accepted to Berkeley was the dude who got accepted to Yale.

If you are from Cali, then its a different story ;)

Yeah I live in Cali.

You stand a good change of getting into UCB. Rice can be rather unorthodox in its admissions process so no guarantees but I think you stand a fair chance. MIT and stanford are crapshoots for all but the very best candidates.

I’m just praying for UCB really and now I’m starting to think I wouldn’t go to MIT even if my some miracle I was accepted. Too far…
