Hello! I think I’m going to apply to Northwestern this year to study mechanical engineering. I’m a US citizen but born and raised in Argentina, SAT 1520 (Math 770, Reading 750), I’m going to take the Math II and Physics subject tests in August and October. EC’s include Mathematics Olympiad, Musical theater, Creative writing, Orchestra, Choir, TECHO (volunteer house building), and volunteer in a home for the elderly. GPA is between 3.5 and 4.0, I have an 8.5/10 average, which according to some is equal to a B (3.5), while according to the WES converter is a 4.0. I studied in a British bilingual school, took the IGCSE’s (ICE diploma with merit) and some A and AS levels but I didn’t do great with those. I’ve also thought about UMich and Swarthmore. I know that to be able to attend I need a lot of Merit aid, so if you guys know any good engineering programs that offer merit aid feel free to suggest them down below. Thank you!!
How much are you going to be able to pay? Michigan and Swat are not likely to give you much in the way of scholarships. You aren’t evenna sure thing to get accepted at those two schools’ Engineering depts. I know Michigan deferred some OOS applicants with perfect test scores and grades much to everyone’s shock. They did get accepted RD but no merit money. Not a Dime .
Don’t get me wrong—i think you are s great candidate for any school, but substantial merit money is very difficult to get. Certainly look at some schools with generous scholarships, and give it a go, but if you really need a lot of money to attend, you should be looking at schools like Alabama, New Mexico that are giving out a decent amount of merit.
Ok! Thank you for your input! I can tops pay 20-25k a year and can’t apply for financial aid.
What are your exact IGCSE and A level results? Those will also count toward Admissions.
IGCSE: English as a first language (A), Geography (A), Combined Science (A*), Literature (A), Mathematics (A), ICT (A), Spanish as a first language (A). I only took the Mathematics A Level (B), and took the Lit AS (B), Physics AS (B), Chem AS (B), and Bio AS ©. I know those aren’t good enough grades so I wasn’t thinking of putting them in my applications.
You must use these results as well as predicted ALevel results. They’ll be required as part of your application.
Why aren’t you taking ALevels in your areas of strength (English, Geography, +1)?
Ok! English and Geography A levels aren’t offered at my school, only the Lit AS and English AS (It’s weird I know), but I’ll see what I can do. Thank you!!
