Extra Information:

  • Legacy NYU Stern

  • Missed a month of school junior year due to COVID reasons as school policy had resulted in me having to not be there 2 weeks because I had been in contact with a friend who had COVID and then I got COVID 2 after that so I was out for another 2 weeks. Could not make up any exams until I got back and I had around 30 to makeup when I got back. Received barely any instruction and was just expected to keep up anyway. Got medically diagnosed with anxiety which is why my GPA dipped to a cumulative 3.75 unweighted but was able to bounce back despite what had happened showing resilience which is what I think my essay will be about

You don’t have tippy-top GPA and SAT, which is a good thing for Northeastern as they won’t yield protect against you. But you have a good list of academic and EC accomplishments.
ED is a great way to boost your chances at Northeastern, so I’d say it’s a high target for you if you apply ED and send the AOs a “why Northeastern” essay (even though the app doesn’t ask for one).

p.s. your legacy status at NYU means nothing at Northeastern.

Why Northeastern?

They just received 90,000 applications in the current admissions cycle and accepted only 7% of their applicants. When numbers get that big, your application is a lottery ticket. There is no way to figure out if you have a good chance for admissions because many well qualified candidates who look very much like others who have been accepted wi be turned away.

well, that’s why I’m asking about ED. Their ED acceptance rate for 2025 was 53% and this year was 32% due to overflow from the following year. So, for class of 2027, ED acceptance would be in the high 30-low 40% range automatically. Northeastern artificially lowers acceptance rates to game the rankings which is why they have jumped from #108 to #49 in a little over a decade. They also took away the supplemental essay which is why they received 90,000 applications bc everyone was just like “northeastern is a good school, I’ll just go for it because I got nothing to lose and I don’t have to write the essay.” For RD, it would be nearly impossible which is why I’m asking about ED

I get it and I know they’re gaming the system. I also know they’re overcrowded. So we are likely to see those ED acceptance rates come down as well. Are you full pay? A lot of schools - and I think that NEU is one of them - use ED to make their yield more predictable. Being full pay would definitely improve your chances in this case. It’s also worth noting that ED acceptance rates are always inflated to some extent with athletic recruits and certain other hooked candidates.

Agree with the previous posts about about full pay & yield protection at Northeastern.

Are you open to NUin (spending first semester abroad)?

There was an NUin preference question on their 20-21 admissions app with 3 answer options:

Yes, would consider
No, would not consider
Yes, it’s my first choice

D21 checked “first choice” and was admitted EA to NUin with a 4.1 weighted GPA, D’Amore Kim for international Business. (Ultimately, she opted to attend NYU instead).

IMHO this yes, please answer about NUin increased D21’s chances of admission. Northeastern received 90,000 applications during her admissions cycle as well.

Northeastern relies on sending first year students abroad in order to ease overcrowding on campus and also to avoid including lower GPA’s or SAT scores in their admission stats.

Not sure whether the NUin question changed for this year, or whether it will be included for the 22-23 admissions cycle.

My son did the conventional NU admission but parents rave about their students’ NUIn experiences. You can find a lot of student videos on YouTube about their experiences. Popular destinations are Greece, Italy, and Ireland. Some new options this year include Spain, Scotland and Berlin.

Am I reading right that you went up 300 points on the SAT?

I don’t see NEU as likely given the GPA but you never know.

Good luck.

What I’m saying is that they were overcrowded for this year’s app round, which is why it went from 53 to 32 this year so next year it’s bound to go up again back to normal which is around 38-40%. I’m full pay, def thinking about NU IN. I know that northeastern does not include NU IN and NU Bound students in the acceptance rate calculation for those 90000 applications so the actual acceptance rate for RD would be around 14%.

I put NYU down at the top next to northeastern. I’m hooked there and from the research I’ve done, apparently entrance door GPA is a 3.7 and after the 3.7 and the 1520 SAT, it’s simply just your ECs, essays, and recs to distinguish you from other candidates. I’m thinking as NYU as an ED1 and northeastern as an EA. My school sends around 5-10 kids to each school every year and those students had a tad bit higher GPA than me (around a 3.85), but the ECs I have were better. I know some schools are more EC favorable like USC, Stanford and Vandy where there’s been a bunch of kids over the past two years that got in with a 3.6 or so because they had great ECs.

I’m leaning more towards NYU right now because of legacy and all the ECs I have done are business related, which I know their admissions officers really like opposed to somewhere like UPENN where they want to see a more well-rounded applicant who is not all one niche like me.

Yup. GPA is on the lower end but I’ve heard admissions looks holistically which is why I recompensed drastically in the 4 other areas to make up for it

Thanks for the input! Never had thought about that before so def considering doing that. Did she end up going and if she did, how did she like it?

She really loved Northeastern, but ultimately decided to attend NYU. NYU had a program that she preferred outside of its business school that was not available at Northeastern.

BTW, I do not think that she would have been admitted to Stern at NYU if she had applied there. IMO it’s even more reach-y than D’Amore-Kim at Northeastern. But, good that you have a hook at NYU, excellent EC’s & an impressive SAT score (D couldn’t take the SAT due to multiple COVID cancellations).

Schools use the word holistically so they’re not caught in a trick box - well you let 8 others in with that GPA, SAT.

Never say never.

If you are applying EA (as you said in a message farther down), then that lessens your odds.

You should apply ED (if you are going to use it) to where you want to go, not just where you’re going to get in - so if NYU isn’t the top choice, you shouldn’t ED there - in my opinion.

Also, you asked for a chance me - so don’t try to justify people why they are wrong.

Hopefully you’ll prove us wrong but don’t ask for a different answer or try to justify an answer. Only the admissions committee knows the answer.

Legacy is only a minor hook. NYU is a harder admit than NEU.

Apply EA to NEU and your chances drop significantly. If you don’t get admitted to NYU through ED then you may want to switch to ED2 at NEU.

thanks for the tip. Do you think it’s going be smart to go EA anyways if I’m applying to around 23 other schools or stick ED2?

Oh sorry I wasn’t trying to come off that way I’m just really confused based off other outside research I’ve done. Thanks for the input!

Acceptance rate is no longer considered in the USNews rankings and when it was it was weighted a mere 5%. There are many other reasons for Northeastern’s rise in the rankings: major new facilities, high research funding etc. And Northeastern has never had a supplemental essay to the best of my knowledge.

What Tom says is true. In addition, NU has made a concerted effort to encourage students to graduate in 4 years with two co-ops instead of 5 years with 3 co-ops. I don’t believe they “gamed” the system by doing something underhanded. They boosted their ranking by encouraging more students to graduate in 4 years since the 4-year graduation rate was a factor in the US News rankings. They played the game.
